So I am thinking of buy my wife a .270 and would like any information that anyone has to offer. The rifle I am looking at getting her is a Ruger M77 MkII all weather, I believe that it has a 22" bbl. So I was showing my Dad the gun and was talking to him about it, he told me that his brother had a .270 (make and model unknown) and it had a short bbl and he said that it actually kicked pretty hard. My wife has shot my 7mm Mag Very Happy and my brothers 30-06 so I figure she can handle the .270.
Basically I was curious if anyone had any thoughts on the subject or recomendations.

great caliber. the rugers are a good make. do you reload? if not stick to 130grn to start with as 150grn have noticably more recoil. put a good recoil pad on it as rugers thin red one is not very good Ive got a bisley shotgun pad on mine. if you load or can get loads done for you 110grn loads have less boot still and can be loaded down even more till are real soft shooting. 130grn will take care of most animals. ive shot horses, cows, deer, pigs, goats, thar, chamious.wallaby, hares, rabbits, magpies, stoats & a mouse with mine.

tio7mm

My wife owns a .270 pre 1964 M70 and that gun is a sweetheart, 24" barrel and with the scope it weighs in at 9.3lbs. If its the winchester version your talking about, it does not kick hard at all.

Now if it was a 270 weatherby magnum, yes they definitely kick more than the 270 win.

I know that some of the .270 guys will be on to answer your questions before long. When I started looking at a rifle for my daughters I ended up with a .260 Rem, Ruger 77 Compact. If you look at the articles here you'll see my write up on it. Just throwing a thought your way (and probably muddying the water!).

Forgot to add, if your wife can fire a 7mm Rem Mag, she will have no problems with either win or wby.

I am going with the .270 for cheap ammo like the ol 06 and the better down range performance then the ol 06. I love the ruger compact and wish I could get a caliber I would like in one cuz i would purchase one in a heart beat but for the wife since she is maily going to be deer hunting I do not want something that is going to cost to much. Cost is not an issue for me as you can tel cuz I shoot a 7mm mag (Ruger m77 MkII) and the ammo cost a pretty good chunk. Thanks for the info and any more would be appriciated.

.270 is a good choice for about anyone.. I do not think you will be dissapointed. It will do anything you need it to in North America.

If recoil is a concern... a .243 or a P-slinger says a .260 rem are excellent for deer sized game too. .243 has more factory amo choices though.

if cost is not too big of concern and you dont reload yourself. find a custom loading place and get some soft shooting 130 grn loads for your lady. the velocity doesnt have to be right up there to snot deer over and she will enjoy it more. I load 170grn now for in the bush I was using 150s and have a great long range accurate 130grn load. I have a .223 for my knock around gun so the .270 is my deer/ big trip gun now. When it was my only rifle I loaded good loads not too hot and could shoot all day . When shooting wallabies 30-40 loads a day was not uncommon.

If she's comfortable shooting a 7 mag or an 06 she's not going to have a problem with a .270 !!!

The exception to this would be when you get into light weight guns.
Here's a link to a recoil calculator Here if you want to play with some numbers for comparison.

So it looks like the .270 is out, I took my wife to look at it and she decided that she did not like the stock however she found a 7MM Mag Waetherby Mark 5 that she really liked. I will have to admit it is a nice gun with good weight. If we get it I will need to get a scope. I have one but its a little low class for a weatherby lol. Its a great low end scope but it has been a great setup for me in the past. Anyway so I may just have to go buy the .270 for myself lol. I am also thinking of talking to my Grandfather in law who has a bunch of stuff for building guns which he offered to let me have at one time, I am thinking I may build myself a rifle.

I built a .270 out of a surplus Mauser action. I used a Remington stock, the barrel was a take-off from my gunsmith (don't know what it was from but it was new). It's one of my favorites to shoot. Low recoil really, it's accurate and weighs about 7 1/2lbs. unloaded. I think it's a great mid-range gun and I think the very best loads of mine are in the 130gr bullets, which are easy on you anyway. It's a sweet caliber, you'll love it. Your wife missed out cause you'll be hooked on it.

I use nothing but cheapo scopes and have never spent over $200 on one. Never had any problems with them. One thing I always check out on a scope is whether there is a short range paralax problem or not. Only time I ever had a problem was with a dot scope. It was all over the place and I really couldn't tell until I shot it at the bench rest. I didn't spend much on it but still it made me smokin mad, after tryin and tryin to sight it in.

Another thing to check out is how much the viewing area squishes when you max out a variable power scope. I have one that when you max it out your eye has to be in the perfect spot to see through it. Not too easy to do, if you have to rush to shoot.

I've spent the past couple of days shooting a new left handed Ruger Hawkeye M77 MkII whilst developing loads for it.
This is the stainless steel with laminate stock version.
The trigger is WAY better than the old one right out the box - maybe 4lbs pull which is fine by me for a hunting rifle.
So far it has shot well everything I've fed it, with five shot groups of 1"-1.5" @ 100yds.
Oddly for a .270 the 150gr Sierra bullets have been the ones producing the tightest groups, rather than the 130gr offerings.
Conditions have been less than good & hopefully tomorrow's range session will be less windy, as I'm ready to try out some 90 & 100gr varmint loads.
For a rifle costing less than $600 I can't think of a better buy.

Better down range performance than the .30-06?

Don't get me wrong I like the .270.
