Hey Guys

My Buddy and I are going to start hand loading for my new Tikka 300 Win Mag. He has a couple of books with some different combinations of powder and bullits.
I'm just lookin for some tips and suggestions that anyone might have, or any good combinations that you might be using.

Thanks PPL

Rick

H1000 Winchester case with Federal Mag primers,180gr Nosler accurbond work well in my Winchester 300 Wm with a 26" barrel.
Some like R22 or other powders . Just try a few different loads to see what that tikka likes , since that is not what we can tell you. Every gun is different .
If that gun is new try to get an idea of it's grouping with a few boxs of Federal cheaper brand of ammo .

My tikka started to group it's best after I fired about 60 rounds through the barrel .
Only mod to the rifle was adding a limbsaver pad .It changed the recoil of a beast to that of a pussy cat .
Enjoy your Tikka .I love mine . Very Happy

h1000 was my choice for the .300 also 200g speer spitzers were the projectile back then I wasn't as picky about cases as I am now and used Remingtons or Winchesters whatever was available both worked though.

I suggest only using the Federal 215 or 215M primers !!!

Magnum primers, slow powder and 180 grs bullets will not disappoint you. I myself like Sierra's 180 grs RN very much, but I'm not such a 3-4-500 yards shooter. My eyes just disappoint me often and I don't want to go halve a mile on foot just to discover I better phoned for a dog...

For very small groups I had my 180 grs Norma. A silver bullet with a yellow plastic nose, also not bad at all for hunting.

My pet load for my Browning A-Bolt is a Barnes 168 gr. TSX Match behind 73 grs. of IMR 4350 using a Federal 215M primer in Federal Premium cases which clock 3,235 fps and produce slightly less than 1 inch groups at 200 yards. I call this load Thors' Hammer. So far it has anchored 2 Elk and close to a dozen deer in the hands of myself and my family . Have to love not tracking game,,, just lights out Very Happy

10spot - that a pretty potent load. I'm still strifing for a load that puts the lights out while still leaving some edible meat left.

It's all about shot placement and bullet choice. If you are on a hunt where either a longer shot on elk or a shorter shot on whitetail or blacktail etc is a possibility then a very potent load will drop the elk and also, when a spine shot (neck) is taken on a deer, will ruin very little meat. The deer I took last year caught the bullet just behind the right ear, with exit just in front of the left ear. That one stood still for me, though. This isn't always possible.
A shot within 3 or 4 inches of the spine with a potent round will drop a deer in its tracks. For this I prefer a rapidly expanding bullet. The .30 cal 180gr Hornady round Nose is excellent. My .300 WBY gets excellent groups with this bullet and 77.1 gr of RL-22, a mid-power load.

I use a beter bullet just over the plain cup and core , so the bullet will not blow up on a short range deer .You get a good pass through and little or no meat loss .The speer Grandslam and Nolser Accubond come to mind , and shots are behind the shoulder into the boiler room.
99.9 % of the time I prefer a calipier of lesser power where Vel. is about 2400 at the muzzle trather than something close to 3000.
