Two weeks ago I bought a nice 1989 Marlin .30-30. Still haven't fired it.

The problem is I've always wanted a .307 - spent two years looking for one, then bought a Marlin .375Win when I discoverd MAriln never shipped .307's.

So I'm considering sending this one of to Nonneman's to get it reamed for $75. At that price I'll still only have $300 in it.

There are 3 boxes of .30-30 ammo in the safe, but if I don't use them I can give them to my buddy. (Or better yet, I'll shoot them in his .30-30.)

My intent would be to use .300 Savage load data, as the cases are almost identical (the .307 is ever so slightly larger) because the SAAMI maximum for the .300 Savage is 46,000 CUP versus 52,000 CUP for the .307. That still allows for the following velocities:

.300 Savage, 46,000CUP SAAMI Max Pressure

130g, 3,000fps, Hornady 5th, 22" barrel
150g, 2,800fps, Hornady 5th, 22" barrel
170g, 2,535fps, Hodgdon Annual Manual 2004, 20" barrel

I have pretty much discarded the idea of a .30-30AI rechamber because the .307 will do the same thing at lower pressures or do more at Savage pressures. I'll be doing 99% of my hunting wth a scope.

Thoughts?

Howdy. From What my loading books say the industry maximum average pressure for the 30-30 is 38,000 cup. Now i don't know if the max pressures are given for the case, action or both. I wouldn't think you would want to exceed that mark. The 300 savage pressures are much higher. I would check with a pro on the matter. Hope it works out for ya.

Joe –

Its true the .30-30 has a SAAMI (industry standard) maximum pressure of 38,000 CUP. Here are a few others for comparison:
Code::
28,000 CUP - .45-70 SAAMI
38,000 CUP - .30-30 SAAMI
40,000 CUP - .45-70 load data for Marlins (Hodgdon, Hornady, Barnes
43,500 PSI – 450 Marlin SAAMI
44,000 CUP – 444 Marlin SAAMI
45,000 CUP – 457 Mag (Wild West Guns rechambered Marlin .45-70)
46,000 CUP - .300 Savage SAAMI
52,000 CUP - .356 Win (Marlin 336 ER) SAAMI
52,000 CUP - .375 Win (Marlin 375) SAAMI

The .300 Savage and .307 cases are very nearly identical in size, with the .307 being ever so slightly larger and the .300 Win Mag having a 0.040” advantage in COL. In theory, they should be able to shoot identical bullets to similar velocities at similar pressures. My intent would be to use the .300 Savage load data (46,000 CUP max) as a top load maybe back off a few fps. That should put me in the 44,000 CUP range or less.

My Marlin .45-70 loads have been measured to be right at 40,000 CUP and my .375 Win Marlin loads are around 45,000 CUP. Given the number of 40,000 CUP .45-70’s, 444’s. 450’s, .356’s and .375’s in use – not to mention the .457 Mags - I’m not too concerned about pushing 44,000 CUP in a Marlin of modern (1989) manufacture. I do understand the need for caution, however, and do not intend to get near the .307’s 52,000 CUP SAAMI maximum.

Perusing my load manuals, I created the following spreadsheet:
Code::

Cartridge          SAAMI Maximums
.30-30              38,000 CUP
.300 Savage         46,000 CUP
.307 Win            52,000 CUP
