Don't forget that hundred mile race across the Sierras on horseback. Can't remember where it starts or ends right now though.

Do you guys run stop signs, blow through traffic lights that are red, and hold up a line of cars four blocks long when you ride your bikes?
The bike riders around here act like they have unconditional right-of-way.

When we ride, we do slow down and roll through stop signs if no other vehicles are present. If cars are nearby, we stop and take our turn as appropriate. We stop for red lights. Often we don't trip them and have to go through them when the road is clear.

perspective brings understanding , I am not excusing anyone's behavior, merely speaking from experience. before i was a cyclist I too was overcritical of cyclists, not saying there aren't some bad apples. but Suz might say walk a mile in their moccasins first. or 60?

Nice scoot FN, like them colors!
Yeh- I was a pack rider at one time. We had pelton's of up to 300 riders. Sometimes we'd get an escort through sections. Sometime's the slower riders got tickets. We'd usually be as fast or faster than traffic on most roads and after the first kick it would thin out by 40% I have seen some bikers ride 3-4 wide talking and all that BS. I didn't do bunch rides for fun I was training and it hurt for 3-5 hours atta time and after the first kick it was a loooong pace line 1-3 wide, maybe 4 at the most. Lota guys just sit in and suck wheels to get pulled along thinkin' they're cool riding in a pack. Rather, move up front an take some pulls at 30mph with the pack beating the drum behind ya. Very neat feeling and addictive. It's like being on the tip of a giant spear slicing through the wind.

Here's the latest pedal-pusher...I modified my Giant XTC carbon (top half)/alloy (bottom half) framed bike. Replaced the suspension fork with a rigid, lost two pounds- also, installed my tubeless vavle stem's and put some Stan's in to seal the tires, now it's tubless! Installed a new bar and saddle too. Rides nice, man it's fast. The new geomtry is perfect. Climbs and steers much better w?o that 100mm fork the factory hung on it. Handles like a top drawer hardtail racer now. Right at #22. Results look great and professional. VERY happy with it. Lil dirty from the test ride...

Paul,
Old question I know but ....
I bike, put around 900 miles on my bike this summer, and I've been missed about a dozen times by cars, who decide that even though the road is clearly marked for bike lanes they do not need to pay attention to any bikers that may be there. Nor for right turns, or for stopping their own vehicles when there is a red light and the bike is stopping for it. Or worse, they see there are parked cars, or the distance from the curb to the car in the left lane with the bike there is too small for their car to fit, but they still try to fit.
My biggest pet peeve about cars however, is most of the time due to the number of cars legally parked on the right side of the road all the drivers will just stay in the left "passing" lane, however, cause of that they try to pass between rows of parked cars, and again do not care if there are bikers in their way as they try to speed away to quickly pass someone. Passing on the right under any circumstances here can lead to suspension of ones license.
So I do what your hypothetical biker was doing, taking up the entire lane, and cars "not noticing" me has dropped down dramatically, to zero as a matter of fact. Legally speaking, a bike is considered a road vehicle and gets the "same" rights as a car. In a sense, but in a sense bikers have more rights ....
Not sure of anywhere else, but walkers have the unconditional right of way legally here, followed by cyclists, then drivers. Case and point, I had one guy continuously honk at me a couple weeks ago, regretfully for him, there was a cop behind both of us, and he stopped us both, and gave the driver a ticket, not me for taking up the lane, but the driver for honking at another vehicle on the road that is following all the laws.
Drivers expect bikers to bike over the gutters etc, however by law that is "unsafe", and when driving or biking, your supposed to be as far to the right as possible to be "safe", which means for bikes, biking in a straight line that doesn't require the biker to swerve in and out of the right area each time they are nearing a gutter or parked cars for that matter.
By the time you get out that far left in the right lane, your already taking up the majority of the lane, and cars cannot pass by you on the right lane, they must go to the left one to pass. Which by the way is what you MUST do when you pass either a bike or a car here.
Long slightly ranting post I know, but I've come to like living, and at this point I as a whole cannot trust drivers. Which is why when I drive my truck I stay the hell away from bikers cause I know how that feels.
Dimitri

I feel bad, I use to ride a lot, just for pleasure, not for competition. I would ride about 20 miles every night after work, and 50 or so on the weekends. Occasionally I would pull a century , but that was a little much for me. After marriage and then multiple back surgeries, I went from diamond frames to recumbent and I might ride 20 miles a week now if I'm lucky. I got old and I sold out I guess. lol
