have you fellas priced out mutton/lamb in the shops later????
stone the crows digger the price is enough to bring tears to the eye!
I asked a farmer/work mate how much for an old sheep for the freezer nothing flash no lamb or even young stuff just a mutton... "well we have 2 left"he said"the wife made him keep them for HIS freezer the others he sold and got.....$178.00 EACH wtf wtf wtf
THATS PLURRY REDICULAS
I can remember dad buying 500 old ewes most of which were im lamb for $0.50 each back in the late 80s
I would have paid $50-75 without too much problem but at that price its off the menu Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad
Iwill have to go shoot a deer instead Very Happy

Well...it's been a few years since I bought a side of lamb, but I vaguely remember paying about $16 - $18 for a full side. A leg of lamb runs about $11 a kilogram, lamb loin chops are about $13 - $15 a kilogram, "frenched" cutlets are around $32 a kilogram...certainly not cheap.

"three years ago lambs were selling for as little as $2 a head."

"state record of $244 per lamb set at Naracoorte saleyards on Tuesday."

Go shoot a deer...what a damn fine idea Elvis...I might see if I can do the same mate.

Cheers, Vince

In the northern part of the state, there is a lamb farm where you can purchase a live animal for prices between $2.50 - $2.75 a pound. This does not include butchering and processing the animal which you can do yourself or hire one of the farmhands to do it for you at additional cost. Almost 5 years ago we bought 110lb sheep which yielded about 55-60lbs and had it butchered and processed for $48.00. Shocked Now its more than 6x the cost.

Store bought lamb ranges from $7.00 to $10.00 a pound here, and I have seen restaurant menus with prices at $35.00 for a leg of lamb. wtf

Might be a good idea to invest in a lamb or 2 and raise it for next year. Very Happy

On 2nd thought, I'll go and shoot a deer. Laughing

Price of lamb is irrelevant. I grew up on it. Easter and Christmas would not be the same without a roasted lamb.

Lamb is about 2.25$ to 2.50$ a pound here it seems live at farmers auctions which ain't bad. But you got to kill, and butcher it yourself. But that doesn't faze anyone here now does it?

When I first came to Australia, there is a butcher shop right in front of the bus stop to our home.
Back then I could not yet speak or read English well.
I remember the advertising on the window says "Half Lamb $8.00",

Well, coming from Indonesia where meat are EXPENSIVE,
I thought they mean half a kilo of lamb, which is about right for the meat prices in Indonesia at the time
(I also thought they meant one pound which is about half a kilo)
So I went in and hand the butcher $16.00 and say "lamb", thinking I am buying a kilo of meat of whatever cut..

Here I was, with dropping jaw standing in the butcher, and the fellow brought out bags and bags and bags of meat..
Lucky that our home is close by, I took off and get my brothers to help bring them back to home.
And even luckier, that the whole family enjoys meat, because thats what the six of us eat for the next week or so.

Yeah meat prices has gone up really high lately.
Australian sheep are very highly prized meat in Asian countries due to the "purity" of their diet.
If the overseas buyers are willing to pay big $$ for them, then it is the law of supply and demand that dictate their price.

That doesn't help our farmers here, knowing that we ARE godzone and 100% pure!
