Oh boy....I'll be watchin' this one as I haven't made up my mind as to what calibre would suit me for a long range varmint round. I absolutely have no interest in the 223 or any varient of it. Lookin' at the stats of the .22-250 and knowing some of the case origin I tend to side with it, but that could change. But probably not for .223...I have not seen a good shootin' platform for it...

I've had my 22-250 for about 25 years and I really like it. I have not used it a lot in the last 10 years but other than having a louder report then the other centerfire 22's it has ample speed and range and there are many bullets available for the reloader. It certainly is faster than a .223. If I was to buy another varmint round it would be another 22-250.

I have a .223 (actually 3)and a 243. In my opinion the 22-250 only has an advantage over the 223 on a calm day. At the ranges where it beats the 223(300 and over) if theres much of a breeze the 22 bullets tend to drift more and I prefer my 243 shooting 70 grain ballistic tips. The .223 does almost everything the 22-250 will with less powder burned and longer barrel life. I also load my .223s with inexpensive military brass and if I cant find a empty in the grass I dont worry about it.

Like I said, everyone has their own opinion or reason for shooting whatever caliber there is and I wouldn't have a .223 I like my 22-250. Loaded below max they don't burn barrels and are still faster then a .223.

On breezy days I like to use my 6mm Rem or my 25-06 Rem.

Gidday Bushy, how are ya mate?
Seems you and I are almost from the same mould....I have no interest or great love for the .223 either. In fact I think it is a grossly overrated cartridge. (I'll bet that will put the cat amongst the pigeons!) Shocked But seriously, I've only ever considered the .223 to be nothing more than a glorified .222, and the .222 Mag to be a much better cartridge, well in my feeble mind anyway.

As for the 22.250....it is a great cartridge, although you need to watch your barrel for excessive wear. A mate over here only got about 3500 - 4000 rounds out of his barrel, but it did shoot accurately right to the end.

Cheers, Vince

What does everyone think of the Moly coated bullets? They are supposed to reduce barrel wear. That's what I've been using in my 22-250 since they came out.

Which bullets? Or are you doing the moly yourself?

Dallan, I'm talking about the Hornady V-Max moly coated bullets. I guess I didn't explain myself very well did I?

The best varmint round is the one that you think you want. Experience will tell you the one that you will need. Lots of good choices posted here. Pick one and go with it. No matter what you pick, you'll have a good time.--tr

 I'll prolly get a lot of flack about this answer, but I bet I get a lot of supporters too. For the best ALL AROUND varmint round, the .223 can't be beat.

Why would you think of anything else?

True Dat!!!! Very Happy

The nice thing is there is no true "best round / best caliber". Its fun to have a whole bunch of options from the little .17HMR on up to a 25-06 or more.

Life would be boring if all we had was a single caliber option Smile

I can't decide so I have some of each! I have taken coyotes with .223, .22-250, .243 and the dog on my Avatar picture was taken with a 110 V-max in a 30-06. I started varmint hunting with an SKS even!

Whatever you pick, shoot it often and shoot it well. Nothing beats trigger time to insure quality hits at all ranges.
