So I went to a yard sale and picked up a 300 Win Mag. Nice gun! Any suggestions on best loads for deer and elk. The gun is a Rem 700. 26 in barrel The books are filled with powders and loads. I thinking 180 NP. For elk. Maybe a 150 Hornady BTSP. For deer. Accuracy is what I looking for with somthing behind it. What are your thoughts?

I load for my brother's Browning, which also has a 26" barrel. His favorite load is 71.7 gr. of imr 4350; cci 250 primer with 165 gr. sierra BTSP. Speed is 3150 fps. He has taken several moose and deer with this load. He won't even let me try something new. Can't argue with success.

My buddy uses nothing but a 225 grain bullet in his and he hunts deer and moose with it. You loose a little of the flat shooting with the 225 gr, but it hits like a freight train.

I also suggest not using two different loads in the same gun. Invariably, the scope settings will be different between the loads and that just becomes a pain in the butt going back and forth. Pick a good all around load and go with it.

I'm not a fan of small bullets and 150 grain in a 300 win is a small bullet, but that's just me. I tend to pick a bullet size from the heavier end of the calibers range just because of hitting power. An extra inch or two of drop really doesn't matter to me as long as the load carries the foot pounds of energy out at range. I still swear by my 175 grains in my 7mm Rem mag, even though a 160 gr. might shoot a little flatter. Food for thought.

I'm starting to feel full. You are right on the money. It would be smarter to decide just how the gun will be used. Then start looking for the bullet weight. I see no moose in my future but Elk, deer, lions and a lot of cyotes could be real possibilites. I guess I have been shooting my old 06 for so many years I need to get out of that box and into a new one. Many Thanks

Im using 180 gr Sierra Game King #2160 and 70.0 gr of IMR 4350, CCE 250 primer, Winchester Cases in A Browning A-Bold 26" barrel. This is a Maximum Load so back off and work back up to a safe load in your rifle.
It knocks deer down a-floppin. Some complain about too much meat dammage with the Game King but I have not experienced that.
The Nosler Partition would be a good bullet to work a load up with especially for elk even though the Game King should work for elk too. The Nosler No5 manual load for 180 gr NP in the 300 WM using Winchester Cases and Federal 215 primers is 66.0 to 70.0 grs of IMR4350 showing the best accuracy at or near maximum load in their test barrel (Lilja 24").
To get more life out of your belted magnum cases you might want to invest in this special Belted Magnum Sizing Die to size your cases. It works for almost all belted cases including the 300 WM. A little expensive but the extended life of the cases warrents the cost.

I just got back from a deer-moose hunt with my brother. He shot a very nice muledeer with the load I mentioned. I have not witnessed a kill with it but my brother says they go down so fast the game is sometimes hard to find if you don't have a reference to place them near. The buck was a 5x5 that I would say field dressed over 250#. Should score over 170.

WW brass
CI 250

74.5g H4350, 168g TSX, 3246fps

70.0g H4350, 180g TSX, 3038fps

70.0g H4350, 180g North Fork, 3032fps

Personally, I would stay away from standard cup-and-core bullets like the Hornady Interlock and Sierra Game King, etc. At close range they can become big varmint bullets. Do yourself a favor and go with a Partition, A-Frame, Trophy Bonded, North Fork, TSX, etc.

Yea well if you go to a yard sale and you don't see what you want, just ask! Sometimes you can find a bargin still in the house and the owner has no idea that he wants to sell it. Not just firearms but just about anything you might need. Buy he way thanks to every one for your valued comments.

I had the same experience. Wife said she wanted to go to a garage sale, so, I took her to one. Nothing there for guys other than a sign that said if you don't see it, ask. So I asked if they had any guns for sale, they did!
Keep it coming...

You got it George! Yard sale or no this firearm was one someone had taken a great deal of pride in. Sweet triger, syn stock and no sign of abuse. I liked it and the price was right. It shot a 5 inch groop at 400 yds after trying diferent loads... Money well spent!...

Did you happen to try the load I mentioned earlier. I know two rifles that shoot that 165 sierra btsp very well. Both guns are brownings but I would be interested in knowing if a remington likes it as well. I have found the sierra to cause no more meat damage than other lead core bullets. I tried nosler accubonds and tossed a whole front quarter of my last moose. Also the accubond lost 20 gr. from 180 to 160. Not impressed!

Don. No I haven't tried any other loads yet. I have a late hunt on the Kiabab to go on then I will be back to my day job at the local utility Company. Once back I can start again to try and find the Ideal load for this beast. No I don't have a tag I just go to watch someone else shoot a monster mule deer. When I get back I will follow up on the suggestions I have recieved. Thanks for your help, Gary
