I was just wondering who else owns one and what caliber?
I own three, two .308's and a .243. I had another 308 carbine with the short barrel but I sold it to my nephew. I would still like to find a 7mm-08 and a 30/30 cal. I sure love them 788's

Amazing, isn't it? The 788 introduced at $89 and, now, is a highly sought after model, much like the Nylon Model 12. I've had a few over the years and have found them to be accurate, however, the one I kept is the 30-30. My 788 in 222 Rem was claimed by a grandson; we cut the barrel to 20" and shortened the stock to 12" pull. That rifle has been handed down to several others in the family and continues to be a great first centerfire.

Now, finding magazines -- that's another matter, at least, reasonably priced ones.

Still some great early editions become available from time to time. Their walnut stocks and somewhat better finish make them the desireable ones.

There Fine rifles. I have one in .308 with the carbine barrel and pretty much shoots moa with what ever I load up, from 150's to 180's. I made the mistake of selling it once and 3 years later I traded a sporterized mauser in 7mm08 and got it back Very Happy I won't make the mistake of selling it again.

Had one in .308, the previous owner had a fancy maple stock put on it.
Long story short, it would shoot quarter inch groups if you could keep the stock from shifting. Mad

Looked for 2 1/2 years for a original stock to put on it, one month after selling it I found one at gun show for $50.
I almost bought it just to burn it at deer camp that year !!! Flame

I feel the same way about the one I sold, a mistake I would like to correct. I would buy it back if my nephews wife ever stops hunting. I have a grandson that will be hunting in a few years and that carbine would make a perfect starter gun.

Had one back in '96 sold it because firing pin is a bit weak and to fix it cost $$ - regret regret regret...

I had one in .308 for a while, don't miss it. It was accurate enough but if the bolt was not operated at the right speed the empty would just flip around and lay in the ejection port instead of exiting the rifle. I personally know of a .22-250 788 with the same problem. It may have been a problem with a solution but I traded it off on an 11-87.

I had the same problem with mine and it was just the empty shell hitting the windage adjustment and falling back in. I rolled the scope over and solved that. I have put a new scope on it now and everything is fine.

I still have one in 22-250. Had to give the 243 to my daughter as a present when she finished her hunter safety course. She shot her first deer with it when she was eight (before hunter safety class was required). They both shoot anything put down the barrels extremely well: 1/4" to 1" are routine. Wish I had another .243.

I have a carbine in 7/08...love it. It was my first hunting rifle and I got it for my 13th birthday. It shoots really well with a 140 gr Sierra SPBT and 46 gr of IMR 4350...little cloverleaf groups.

It will never leave my gun cabinet...great little rifles.

I had a 788 in 22-250 and it was very accurate. Many targets, rabbits, coyotes, later...I sold it and bought a new Ruger 77 in 30-06 so I could shoot a bit bigger targets. I liked the 788 but, I too had the ejection problem, not that it really mattered, wounded jacks hardly ever charge.

I own one in .243 win. It was given to me by my uncle quite a few years ago. One of the most accurate rifles I own.

I have a 308 788. It was my first gun. Killed my fiirst deer with it. My two boys fight over it now every hunting season.
It had been though the mill and still ticking. Only bad thing about it is that reloading for it is a pain. Alot of head space. After a few reloads, the cases split or seperate.
