im a missouri hunter where its illegal to chase deer with dogs.

this morning in the spitting snow i got to my stand about 45 minutes before daylight, about 15 minutes after daylight i heard 2 bucks snort and squeal about 90 yards from me with a thick screen of brush in my veiw, they pawed and snorted about 4 minutes getting ready it sounded to fight. i getting ready for a shot if presented was focused and hopeful as they sounded huge so close.

just then a pack of dogs went off on my property about 40 yards from the deer. i heard them take off after the deer in two directions one group following my fence line and the other crossing off my property to the property owned by a large coorperation im not allowed on. i never seen anything just heard it.

its apparent the dogs came off the coorp property.

after a short chase i heard the pack take down one of the deer maybe 300=400 yards away, a few minutes went by and i heard a muzzle loader shot and then silence.

now for the opinions

what would you do if you caught dogs chasing deer on your property which is illegal in missouri. the average farm here runs between 40 and 250 acres while this coorp owns 9000 acres surrounding me which it leases to out of state hunters only.

i personally reported it to MDOC but if i had seen any one of the dogs i would have shot it on sight. i know they did not belong to any neighbor.

Shoot, Shovel and shutup.

Here in Utah its illegal to let dogs roam free... we have alot of problems where they chase and kill our sheep. I've shot and killed countless dogs now. Had a couple neighbors raise holy hell over it but they got put in their place when the Sherrif showed up and ticketed them, then told'em to pay for the damages.

If I find a pack of animals chasing wildlife or cattle its trigger time. Too bad you didnt actually see the dogs, and its hard to tell if the dogs / shot were related. I guess just keep an eye out for more dogs coming over, find tracks or whatever then call your sherrif and complain and show them the tracks... they will look into it.

these were obviously hounds. ive always had hounds as a kid and know. with the quick shot itsd obvious they were being used to chase deer.

me and my 17hmr will be waiting next time. here in missouri any prop owner can carry any gun for any season at the same time so ill carry my muzzle loader and my 17hmr.

i really hate to shoot dogs but today my best chance to kill a world class deer this year was ruined.

Dogs in a small game setting, yeah......But in a big game hunt, well, i'd have to agree with you on this and if you could make a positive ID, with it comming across on your property, activate the bang switch and leave it for the coyotes.

If I saw dogs chasing deer deer, I would do my best to put them out of this world. Coyotes and the like are open season. If I saw a dog with a collar I might think twice before shooting but then only for the consideration of the land owner.

Eitherway, people take a dim view of wild dogs around these parts. To many ranchers both cattle and sheep lose valuable stock to preditors.
The same can be said for free range cats. The satisfying sound of a high velocity bullet hitting a feline slinking across a road is music to my ears.

Growing up in rural Oregon, and in accordance with "Dad's Rules", it was "SSS" for any dogs chasing deer on our property. There was a rest stop on the highway a couple miles from our house. Lotsa unwanted dogs got dumped over the fence there and ended up S&S'd.... Stupid people! Cats as well, never saw any though-they probably ended up as 'yote/bobcat snacks Very Happy .

Glimpsed 3 wild/feral dogs take down a doe one time while deer hunting as a teenager. Mad Mad Mad Moved in and wacked all 3 with the 742 Very Happy , then finished the doe. Man, that was a bad scene, but it felt good to kill those dogs. Can still remember the doe bawling. Shook me up enough to where I almost quit hunting.

Other times, saw deer run by with their tongues hanging out. We learned to get ready, then SSS 'cause something was running them. Always had loaded guns handy in the house as well. "Course, that just isn't PC anymore Crying or Very sad . What were my parents thinking Confused ? My bro and I coulda been seriously killed or worse! Shocked Very Happy Shocked !

It's legal to hunt deer in Georgia with dogs. I did it once a long time ago, didn't like it Shocked :wtf:. I don't criticize those who do as it's their gig. We do get "lost" deer hounds (with radio collars) on our property once or twice a season. Cart'em off to the clubhouse and call the owners..... Most all are good people, they just hunt differently than I do.

Sako

As much as I hate hunting with dogs and deplore dogs running deer and will shoot any that I find running deer I must remind you that the dogs are doing what dogs do. Anotherwords it's normal for them. Personally I would rather shoot the person that released or abandoned the dogs in the first place. I find it hard to blame dogs for being dogs...

I had a little Jack Rustle that would track deer for local idiot's who shot and wounded deer, but could not find them with there puny tracking skills Mad , we got payed for his little nose and he would only trail deer when told to, If you said "NO" in a loud clear voice, deer could run over him and he would leave them alone.
I think we did a good thing in helping to recover lost deer.

Ya hit the nail on the head Bushmaster. Bonk It is the owners fault and your right dogs will be dogs. These people let there dogs roam free ( witch is illegal in my state) and they run deer or bite people and then they freak out when something happens to it. It's a shame people don't take better care of there animals.

Crackshot thats pretty cool a jack rustle tracker Laughing

Two points.

Here in Wyoming it is legal to shoot any dog caught chasing wildlife or livestock. In the case of livestock, the dog owner can be issued a ticket and pay for any vet bills incurred by the livestock owner. Owners of dogs chasing wildlife can be fined as well. Sniper BTW, my dads black lab will run right through a herd of deer...if you throw a tennis ball on the other side of it! I have seen him do it. All the deer jumped out of the way when he went through the first time and ignored him after that. He actually bumped a few on his way back and forth. So much for my dads idea that the dog would discourage the deer from eating the garden!
wtf
Owners (and I use the term loosley) who dump their unwanted pets in the country deserve a special place in hell. I have shot more dogs and cats than I can ever count, most from my grandmothers kitchen window with her 22-250. The stray cats would come in and give our cats all kinds of diseases and fight with them. The dogs would almost invariabley go for the chickens, which our dogs were trained to leave alone. All ended up dead and thrown in the burn pit. Evil or Very Mad

I would love to catch every person that by their actions forced me to take action, and "kick them so hard, they'll be wearin their ass for hat". Mad Mad Rant

Agreed, the dogs were doing what comes natural to them and they were hungry. No need to remind me of what "normal" is, I spent my early years far outside the city and have seen nature at it's worst and best with both domesticated critters and wild ones.

We only shot the dogs when they were running/killing deer or running stock on our property. They also, (naturally) attacked/maimed/killed the neighbor's chickens/rabbits and harrassed our cattle as well as other rancher's cattle. Never killed any of our cattle, but they did get a few calves from a neighbor's herd. Springtime was the worst on the fawns and calves. It was a problem that we and the neighbors solved by killing the dogs. None of us enjoyed doing it.

The blame does go directly on the person who dumped the dog(s).
I fully despise the people who did it and those who still do. As I said, "stupid people". And they deserve to be punished for it.

OSP couldn't do much about it. Just too easy to dump rover and fluffy over the fence and drive away. Their problem became ours so we just dealt with it.

We have the same problem here in Australia with feral cats and dogs. Worst part is the dogs cross with dingos and inherit the dingo's hunting skills.

Feral cats carry the toxoplasmosis bacteria which can cause animals and humans to naturally abort foetuses. Can't think of a better reason to SSS each and every one of them.

My son-in-law used to manage a dairy farm and he had hell's own problems with wild dogs. They would wait until a dairy cow would start to calf them hit her in a mob, killing both her and the calf. Cost thousands of dollars in lost cattle. Another good reason to....SSS Very Happy

Pig hunters use dogs over here, but that is legal and the owners are very protective of their dogs. I'm sure they treat them better than their kids. These dogs are well trained and controlled and never go wild.
[php]Australian Pig and Hog Hunting

Any property owner I know would be the first to shoot one of their own dogs if they found that they were killing stock.

Spacedone, I would identify the dog and owner if I could and put it in the hands of the authorities. If you catch the dog a second time, or any belonging to the same owner...SSS without hesitation, and keep quiet about it. Sorta reminds me of the old joke about the kid filling in a grave. When asked by his neighbour what he was burying he said my goldfish. Kinda big grave for a goldfish isn't it said the neighbour. No, it's inside your f@#%&$g cat!!!

Cheers, Vince
