This is NOT how you do it...

Girl, you throw like a girl!

Haha Haha Haha

Every soldier should experience a grenade going off that close, would give them a whole new outlook on respect for explosive fragmentation weapons.

If "throwing like a girl" means that you can't throw the grenade over the berm, then yes - it can get you and anyone close in trouble.

Maybe they should start with practice grenades....

Living proof (just barely) that not all females are cut out for combat, regardless ofvwhat the hairey armpitted feminists would tell you.
Neither are some males.
The instructors are switched on and bloody quick, this may have happened before........

I would imagine that most Armies are the same Paul...they actually start with practice dummy grenades, advance on to practice grenades, then throw the real thing.

In the Aussie Army back in the 70's and through to the 90's, we went through the motions of preparing, then throwing the grenade with dummy (just the body) M30 grenades. These dummy bodies where then prepared with a charge (a small bag of black powder) and a plastic plug inserted into the base, after which a normal grenade fuse was fitted. These practice grenades were identical in size and weight to the real thing. When thrown, all steps and actions were exactly the same as for throwing a "live" grenade except when it detonated it was pretty much just a loud POP and the plastic plug was blown out of the base.

After throwing half a dozen practice grenades we then advanced to the real thing...M26 Fragmentation Grenade. The steps and actions were identical to the practice grenade except when this one detonated it went off with a most satisfying, very loud, CRUMP. The one thing most guys had problems with was standing up watching the flight of the grenade and identifying where it landed and not dropping down behind the berm until told.

We had the occasional kerfuffle at the throwing point. We were taught when you pulled the pin (pulling one with your teeth was impossible), you looked through the hole where the pin came from to ensure there was no obstruction, placed the pin on the wall in front of you, identified your target area and threw the grenade like you were throwing a baseball (NO overarm throws like you see in the movies). Every now and again you would get a first time thrower go to place the fully armed grenade on the wall instead of the pin (they only did that once) or you would get a nervous young recruit do a "girlie" throw. No problems with that so long as it landed on the other side of the berm. Only had one grenade fall inside the wall and that was "dealt with" quickly (that is why there are two safety officers with each thrower...one to watch the grenade and the other to watch the thrower).

The worst incident I remember in our unit is when a group of soldiers were going through the Assault Grenade Range. Instead of walls and corners to keep you safe, there were pits about eight feet square and three feet deep. It was raining on this day and the guy throwing the grenade slipped in the mud as he was throwing. The grenade went straight up and the three guys vacated the pit real quick. Unfortunately the grenade didn't land in the pit, it came down about three or four feet from the thrower. He as Elvis so eloquently put it "made love to the ground" which was the only thing that saved his life, although he got some rather unpleasant shrapnel injuries and burst eardrums...was bleeding from the eyes, nose and ears. What a lot of people don't realise is that the blast from any explosive laying on top of the open ground goes up at 45 degrees (roughly), taking the bulk of any shrapnel with it. During training, I have stood approximately 45 metres from a 1lb slab of TNT when it detonated and all I felt was the shock wave...nothing else.

By far the worst incident we had in the Aussie Army was when a soldier doing a grenade assault lane in an Asian country mid 80's had a grenade detonated in his ammo pouch causing a sympathetic detonation of two more in the same pouch. He was crawling on his belly when it happened. A real mess. Seems that he was taught to "splay" the ends of the pins for some reason instead of leaving them bent the way they come from the "manufacturer", causing the pin to break and come out.

I have thrown many grenades in many different scenarios and I must admit, I love them. The CRUMP when they detonate is MOST "satisfying". Only things that come close to the same satisfaction is firing the Claymore mine (especially a "bank" of Claymores) and firing the M203 or the M79 40mm Grenade Launcher.

Throws like a girl?…. have you not seen NZ Shot putter Valerie Adams - 2.1M tall and she lobs a shot about 20 meters on average, I reckons she'd throw a grenade a hell of a lot further….
