We all have them so what are they? I really like Douglas barrels and used one to make a .280 rifle. Now Douglas barrels cost a lot more. I used a Starr barrel in .257 and it worked just fine. Lately, I have been buying Adams & Bennett barrels from Midway. A 7x57mm went on a '98 sporter with a ruined bore. Then a .280 went on a 1903A3 that shoots like a dream. I was so impressed with Adams & Bennett barrels that I ordered the last .280 barrel in stock and the brown truck delivered it today. All the best...

Gil,
Good luck with the new project, I hope it's a shooter! I don't own any custom barrels at the moment. A few years ago, I did have a 22-250 Douglas on a FN Mauser... great shooter. Are the Adams & Bennett barrels short chambered for the Mausers?

Yes, the Adams & Bennett barrels are short-chambered and have to be reamed slightly to get the proper fit and headspace. All the best...

Hello Gil,

My barrel of choice comes from your area. I have been using Hart barrels for some years now. They're in Nescopeck, Pa. The actual barrels come from Lafayette, NY. Boy, they're not cheap, but are well made. Hart caters to the benchrest crowd so his standards are necessarily high. All of my Hart barrels (3) are SS, maybe a little heavier than I prefer, but that can't really be helped. I guess one day I'll have to invest in a golf cart to lug those rifles around the woodchuck fields. Best wishes. Wink

vangunsmith,
Welcome to the site, I noticed you said that you would find out soon about the Adams and Bennet barrels. Are you purchasing one or working on one or what? Oh yea are you really a gun smith?

Man I feel left out... I dont own a single barrel that didnt come from the factory. Will be looking into a barrel for my Rugar #1V .22-250 I think soon rather than getting it set back.

EDIT: Ah HA! I just remembered I do have a rebarreled .50 cal muzzleloader. Put a Green Mt barrel on it and it shoots as good as my .50 rem.

Hi guys,

I've had good and bad luck with the Adams&Bennett barrels. The first one was a 243 Win. It shoots pretty good and doesn't foul to bad. The second was chambered in 22/6mmAI and it is very hard on barrels. The third was a 6.5/06 and it shot pretty good also. The only problem with this barrel is it fouls very fast. Within about 15 rounds, the group size increases by about 50 %. I've tried fire lapping and hand lapping with little help. To be fare, this barrel was put on one of my target rifles to see how it would work. Great for hunting, not for target use. The fourth barrel was put on another guys target rifle and he has NO fouling problems with it. It shoots great. The fifth barrel I have a friend bought off of me for one of his projects. We checked the barrel and it is very smooth. We hand lapped it anyway. It's ready when he wants to start his project.

The other barrels I have are,

2 Kreigers,

2 Pac-Nor Supermatch,

2 Douglas XX,

3 Liljas,

I've had very good luck with all of these barrels.

Catch you later,
