I stopped in a shop saturday that I don't get to visit very often. The owner had passed away and the new owner has rearanged the whole store. I found the reloading components and was looking over the powders when my 'ole eyes bugged out. Shocked There was some H-870, now discontinued, that gives top velocity and accuracy in my .264 WM M-70 Westerner. So the H-870 followed me home Very Happy

I tried Accurate 8700 last year but it was just not the same. Velocity was 300 fps slower than H-870 but did give the same accuracy. That put the rifle down in the 270 Win velocitys and negated the advantage of the 264.

I bought some Accurate MagPro at the last gun show in Savannah, GA and I have some test loads ready for the range and I hope that powder will do well in the 264 WM also but now I have a hunting supply of H-870 that should last a little while. The owner said he might have a little more H-870 in the back and I'm waiting for a call.

I went in looking for Ramshot powder, none around, but left with an 'ole favorite.

How much H-870 did you find? A single can or multiple?

I have a shop with three or four pounds left on the self. I've avoided getting it figuring that working a load with it would be a waste, since I wouldn't be able to continue with it after I ran out. If anyone need it, I could see what's available.

Hi Dallan,
He had two on the shelf and I bought those (same lot). I called him today and he said he was sure he had another can or two but had not checked yet and for me to call back tomorrow.
H-870 is getting real scarce so I'm on the prowl for as much as I can pick up for my 264 WM. I'm hoping to buy about 8lbs if I can get it.
Are you looking for it too?
Chris

I recall in the 80s buying 3lbs each of Norma 200, 201
203, (there is no 202) 204, and 205 (now MRP) for $3. a can at
a small gunshop in Vermont. This is an unheard of price, even
then. The old guy was furious because of the spottiness of
Norma's powder delivery from Europe, and decided to stop
carrying it. I probably had more than anyone else in N. America.
At that price he was virtually giving it away. I still have some of it
today. The truth of the matter was the vessel Norma shipped its
supply for the entire year blew up near New York harbor. There were no more deliveries until the following year. Noirma made quite the popular powder back then. Talk about a guy who had something everyone wanted,
I was it. I could have sold it for a mint but decided to hoard it instead.
Everyone should get a price break like that now and then. Best wishes.

I wound up with 3 more one pound jugs of the same lot number as the other two jugs. So I have a good supply for the 264 WM. He said he was going to check the stock room again and see if he could find any more H-870 straglers. All 5 jugs were covered with dust so he has had them in the stock room for a while.
I probably have more H-870 that I will shoot before the barrel burns out on my M70 and I check out of this ole world but at least I have a good supply now. Very Happy

No such thing as too much powder on hand . 264 westerner was my first centerfire .. very nice and very underrated round , have a friend who has a SuperGrade 264 , almost on knees and begging , in a year or two he'll get tired of it and cough it up .. to someone ..

This Westerner was cherry until two years ago. I had an invitation to hunt with a friend in south Texas just east of Laredo so I got the 264 ready as a back up to my Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker 300 WM. As it turns out my hosts rifle had scope problems and I wound up loaning him my Browning and I hunted with the 264. It had been a good year for me and I already had two Georiga 9 pointers in the cooler when a Texas 9 pointer showed up that was the same size as the other two. I passed on him. I did take two coyotes and a javelina with the 264 and it was very potent medicine on them Very Happy Ok, overkill ! Laughing Evil Devil
