here are interesting rust prevention rust off..

The Great Rust Off

and here is from Brownell

Looking at it, it seems that WD40 does have some rust prevention value after all Very Happy

I am thinking of doing the same test in near future using "homebrews".
Anyone have great recipe?

Interesting article. I noticed the first article did not test gun grease which is probably the best rust prevention product. The military stored guns for decades in cosmoline. I prefer RIG (Rust inhibiting Grease) or any quality gun grease inside and out on all metal surfaces. The second link did evaluate gun grease. All the best...

Gelan,

Wait till Bushy gets on. Laughing

Still don't go using this as a "end all be all" for long term storage. There are many products out there that claim to be for preserving metal in storage but anything that leaves a waxy flim verses grease can fail on you without you noticing.

Parts that were on the shelf after being sprayed with these types of wax coating liquids still end up getting a great deal of Rust over time.

Best bet? regular maintenance every 6 months on all firearms that are not used, or heavy grease products like Cosmoline.

I think we are not on the same page.

The idea of rust prevention I have is the type that wipes on and the gun is still ready to use.

I agree that gun grease, Vaseline, motor grease and other thick viscous greasy type are great for storage type rust prevention, but prior to the use of the gun, you got to remove them all thoroughly, thus make it not ideal wipes or coats for your ready guns that you may use daily or weekly etc.

I am talking about such coat that is applied to the metal as you clean your gun and put to storage until tomorrow or next week you are going to use it again.

Such substance as BreakFree, JIB or WD-40 (sorry Bushy) .

Short term storage in the gun safe any oil will do. I do a wipe down of my rifles every month whether used or not to remove and reapply oil to the whole gun.

I am sold on a light film of gun grease for adequate firearm protection. A light film of oil is OK in the short term. Too much oil can damage a stock. All the best...

Since I’ve started using Tri-Flow I haven’t had any rust troubles!!!

In the summer I need to be particularly cautious due to ( I believe ) the ph level that is released when I sweat.

Don't be sorry for me Gelandangan...Be sorry for you when you forget to use one of your WD-40 wiped firearms after 6 months and it is a pretty reddish-brown. I've spent too much time with WD-40 and know what it can and can't do and what it will do if left unattended. It is on my work bench and has been for near 40 years...As a penetrent only...

I use Hoppe's products for cleaning and use 5W-30 synthetic motor oil for lubrication and preservation and Artilery red grease for semi-auto slide rails. All of my weapons do get a periodic wipe down and function check monthly if I remember. Old you know...

Those tests are controled and do not mirror the real world...At least not the one I live in...

You touch on an interesting point Chambered....the acids etc in you skin when you perspire heavily.

Its a well known fact that the edge on a razor blade is destroyed more so by those acids than from cutting the hairs. Those very same acids are deposited on you rifle by your hands and also (if you are anything like me) by dripping from you forehead/face etc on a hot day.

Not one of us would consider leaving the cleaning of the bore overnight, but I wonder how many just leave it at that...clean the bore then put the rifle away till the morning when we will be carrying it again.

Sooo, whilst it is all well and good to oil/grease up your rifle for storage, overnight, without any sort of external cleaning, is enough to start the "rot" setting in on that barrel, trigger, trigger guard, tang or backstrap.

Food for thought.

Cheers, Vince

Bushy,

I was referring to you having a can of it on your workbench. Laughing
