Through other forums I have come across this link, I believe that anyone that reloads will find it informational and usefull. My Thanks to James Calhoon and Savage Shooters for posting this information.

Yes, I shoot Savage Rifles and 9 times out of 10 or greater the Remchesters Fall and Fail to match. One action 5 calibers/barrels another action & oh boy what possibilities.

Primer usage is a blank area with me. I've heard others say that certain primers and powders do not go good together. I'd love to see a listing of something like that. Has anyone made an indepth study on this? I have loads I've made up where the only variable is the primer brand. I still do not see where one gives consistently better results than another. On some days my loads with the Rem. 9 1/2s will perform better than my Federal210s. On other days the opposite is true. Boy, it's really a gray area. Best wishes.

I agree with Cal regarding primers and alleged differences at the range or in the field. My preferences are Winchester or CCI brand primers and both have been outstanding. They are also the brands carried by local gun shops. All the best...

I would love to try some other primers, except the only ones I can find around here are Win..
BTW I tried to vote, am missing something. I tried clicking on Win and nothing, or am I having another senior moment :).

I fixed the statement for you.

Primers are as bad as powders and bullets. For any given powder/bullet combination there is a best primer for a given rifle/pistol. That said, unless one is trying either to be the next World Champion bullseye winner or shoot PD's at 1200.75yds it does NOT matter except for possible pressure problems (change primers, reduce load, and work up IF your loads are warm/high end).

This has been a Hunting Nut PSA, we now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion.

We tested a few different primers in the lab and came up with some intresting results, the load was 46 of varget under a moly coated 155 HPBT heads in new lap 308 cases, THE POWDER WAS SAME TUBE AND PRIMERS WERE ALL NEW(LESS THAN A YEAR FROM MANUFACTURE. Averages were from 10 shot strings.

TYPE SPEED SPREAD
CCI STD 2843 45
CCI BR 2846 20
FED 210 2856 33
FED MAG 2891 21
REM STD 2828 12
REM MAG 2841 72

This was interesting to me since this is almost the exact loading (155Amax/Varget/BR2) I use in my 40X and Vssf Remingtons in 308s. The ES numbers are almost identical to their results.

Billpa, Again a very interesting post !!! Smile Thank you. I was curious....I have been using Winch std (WLR) and have just bought some Fed GM210M and GM215M (Gold Medal Match) Have you had any experience with the Fed's and do you have any data on the WLR's ? Thanks again for the posts...I'm starting to experiment with primers and am finding these posts most helpful.

You guys really have a good post going here. I have been using the Fed GM210M match primers and the Fed 215 Magnum primers. Never really thought about the differences. Recently I've been reloading 25-06 using several references. The only one that mentions primers is Waters Pet Loads and he used mostly Rem 9 1/2. I think my numbers are correct, the book is in the basement. I like the primer chart above that lists hottest to coolest. Maybe someone can validate that information. If I run across a reference manual that talks to that subject, I'll be sure to share the information.

Hello Mox-ct,

I have been considering the Fed Match primers. In fact I am going to buy some this weekend. I gather you have not tried any others? You must be having good luck with the Fed's. Do you have any reservations about recommending them? What calibers do you load? Sorry for all the questions, but I haven't seen many folks talking about the Fed match primers.

I have two types of primers. I have the Fed 215 which is a magnum primer. The other is the GM210M Fed Match primers. The Fed 215 I use in the 300 Wby Mag, I use the GM210M for the .25-06, .30-06 and anything smaller. I have no reservations about using them, however I'm not really sure I'm using them correctly. There just doesn't seem to be very much information about primer use. Today I picked up a box of Rem 9 1/2M, they are a magnum primer. Ken Waters, the author of Pet Loads used them in the .25-06. So you see, even the magnum primers get used in a non magnum cartridge, however the .25-06 is basically the same as the .30-06 just necked down. Now the .25-06 and the .30-06 can use similar powder charges in the 50s grain range I think. I'm not checking my reference manuals, but quoting from memory. I seem to get good results, but I'm using Sierra bullets (the best).

I sure have to agree with you about the Sierra bullets, have had great results with them.
