I got my notification today that I got picked for the FairHill Managed shotgun hunt this year Very Happy . I got picked two years ago but didn't get any. I have to go and Qualify with the shotgun get my managed hunt permit ($35.00) and I should be good to go. In the prior years you were aloud 4 doe's Shooting . The morning of the hunt they have a drawing and one out ten get a buck tag as well. They drag your deer out for you and they have bioligists on site that age your deer. The cub scouts sell breackfast sandwitches in the morning it's a pretty cool deal I'm looking forward to it Very Happy .

Hey, well done Big Guy. You should have a ball shooting deer with a shotgun. What load will you be using...slugs or shot?

Good luck with the buck tag mate. Enjoy your hunt.

Cheers, Vince

Howdy Vince. Slugs, most likley the 300gr Hornady SST'S, The Hunt is in Jan, so I have a little time to try different ones but my H@R Ultra Slug Gun realy likes those SST'S.

I just got back from the Manditory Shotgun "Qualification" Ya have to put 3 outa 5 shots in a 8 inch circle at 40yds wtf and they even give ya a chair to rest on Very Happy .I got picked for the 2nd day of the hunt Mad Jan 8th I realy wanted the first day the deer are real spooked on day 2 but I will take what they gave me Very Happy . I'm using my Rem 1100 instead of my H@R Ultra I think under the circumstances a fast 2nd shot may be needed we can shoot up to 4 deer and I doubt on the second day they will be lounging around Sad . The Rem has a 20" smoothbore slug barrel with fiber optic sites and I have a see through saddle mount Scope mount with a 3-9 Nikon on it and it shoots the Winchester 1oz rifled slugs very well I will keep my shots to 75yds or less and it will do fine. I'm lookin forward to the Hunt Very Happy

Good luck Joe! I have an H&R Ultra Slug 12 gauge as well, Mine likes the lighfields they test fire them with. Your right though, the faster slug gun will probably be better. I have a Ithica Deerslayer that I realy like, Fast and accurate.

Just got back from the hunt. I don't seem to have very good luck at these things. Didn't even see a deer wtf . When I hunted it two years ago I saw two or three moving at light speed but no shots can't even seem to see one this time, there were four of us in this one section three of us didn't see anything one guy saw two and killed them. It was still better than work though Very Happy . I'll apply again untill I get picked again but if I end up with same results I think it will be my last time. It's a lot of fun but it's $35.00 for the permit it's a 85 mile round trip for me to Qaulify for the hunt and then the price of slugs and then missing a day from work it all adds up.
Joe

Well Joe, that is a bummer. But like you said before, a 2nd day hunt involves deer that have been shot at the day before. A deer and a wild hog can both low crawl. Very Happy

Better luck next year...
Ed

Bugger....sorry to hear that mate....but as they say..."A bad day hunting or fishing is better than a good day working.".

At least you were out there, enjoying yourself, having a go and communing with nature and fellow hunters...a bonus in itself.

Cheers, Vince

Oh your right buddy it 's just a litle discouraging thats all, to have bin picked twice with the same result Sad . I read in the paper today they took 114 total 65 the first and 49 the second and most of guys that got them got 2-4 deer there's good spots and bad spots it just sucks to keep gettin the bad spots Laughing .

Dont feel too bad Joe, a couple of years back I got drew for the Letterkenny Army Depot muzzleloader hunt in PA. Now I dont consider myself a trophy hunter, I am mostly after meat, but Letterkenny gets some BIG bucks. I took a climbing stand in, was in the perfect spot, saw lots of deer including 7 bucks within easy range. The catch? For some reason the bucks seemed like they were shedding early that year. Every one of the 7 had already shed (early January). There was a couple that I am sure would have been huge, judging by body size and the size of the pedical where antlers were. I was MAD. I got drew, was in a good spot, did all the homework, saw bucks, but didnt get my buck. I did shoot a big doe late in the day. This was after setting out an extra year because of security concerns on the army base after 9-11.
