I went shooting rabbits a couple of days ago, there is a croft close by where the rabbits do a lot of harm to the new hay crop, so it is a culling expedition, all ages and sizes are taken and left out for the buzzards and foxes. I took 2 rifles with me, my CZ452 22 lr American fitted with a moderator, firinf Eley 38 gr sub sonics and my BRNO ZKW 465 Hornet for the longer ranges.

When I got there I shot a few close in (34 yards) and there were some more a little further away (64 yards) so you can see I was still within 22 lr sub sonic range. Then I spotted some further out still I looked through the scope, a Swift mil dot, and selected a dot and pulled the trigger. well short but the impact scared the rabbit. I gave it an extra dot of elevation and held on the patch of dirt that the rabbit had been on, and, a hit. I swung to the right about 4 yards and there was another young rabbit, I put the relevant dot on his head, squeezed the trigger and over he went. Thankfully there was not a breath of wind.

When I went over to where he was lying I could see that I had hit him in the neck, and it lasered out to 110 yards. Now I know it is not a great shot or anything but I was pleased with it, and I got just as much satisfaction as shooting a deer at that range. I always knew those Eley were good but now I am more confident than ever in them.

Nothing like getting in a good day of varmint shooting while benefiting the farmers at the same time. It’s amazing how quickly rabbits reproduce and how much damage they do to crops. Anytime there is an over population damage control is needed.

Not a great shot? I'd say that's some fine shooting! Smile

I'd say it was a day well spent and some excellent shooting. We eat the ones we take though. Congratulations on the good results. Best wishes.

Man its been too darn long here in Utah since we had a good Jackrabbit explosion. I remember days of my youth where we would go out and shoot hundreds. Now you go out in those same areas and its nothing but hawks and raptors.

Anyone remember the Mud Lake Idaho rabbit explosion in the 80's? People didnt even use guns... just bats. It was absolutely crazy how many rabbits there were

Cal

I'm more used to coming accross you over on AR. I do usually colect all the game I harvest, the trouble with these small rabbits, about the size of a well fed rat, is that there is no meat to speak of on them.

If this photo insert works you can just see the little squirt in the foreground, I was shooting out of the window of my LandRover that you can see in the background

Er I think you need good eyes or look in the album.

Good shooting and thanks for helping a farmer.

Even here in central Phoenix we have areas where a few rabits turns into dozens in a few months. It is no wonder that even in the city we have coyotes living nearby.
