Lots of Northern Europe has that kind of large pebble looking rocks on grassland, especially in Norway's Islands and the UK. Common on islands in General perhaps though.

The stones I see in New Zealand pictures are typically larger and not as smooth.

Only good for grazing land for sheep and goats. Things like cows and pigs don't typically like to graze on that kind of land.

Is it the Waitaki Valley region of the South Island?

Lots of rock in that area, except they raise black beef as well as lamb/sheep as far as I know in that region. I might be wrong though.

Is this area by chance the mountainous area you tramp and hunt mate? Looking at the map, it certainly looks like it would take a reasonably high level of fitness to move around.

The rocks look like they have been rounded and ground smooth under a glacier mate, so I am thinking it might be a glacial valley where the glacier has receded maybe?

getting closer....but the glaciers are a long long way back up the valley...
