how about setting it vertical with muzzle up |
Go idea. That way the case will blow into the ground and I can recover it for inspection. Plus I don't risk gravity causing the firing pin block mechanism to fall into the breech during set-up. Thanks Elvis.

And what will happen to the cleaning rod?
(when the case still seals the chamber and bullet & C° go out the normal way)
I would probably put the barrel horizontally with something to catch what's leaving the barrel (your bullettrap on both sides?), put some black powder or other flamable stuff to the primer that I could ignite with a fuse (and that fire should start the initial primer when I'm on a safe distance). Use heat to start that primer (but add this heat only in a safe way).
It could be a nice test to see what enters the bullettrap most, the case or the bullet/rod
but at the end or I will have an empty barrel or the primer and load is gone, both will make my situation better.

Be cause the bullet and cleaning rod have more mass, especially with the cleaning rod affixed to the bullets. I think it will stay in place and the brass case will be blown clear of the chamber. Horizontal .... I like that idea also. Thanks.

and cover it up with a wed towel or so that when things go wrong, it'll have a parachute to slow down its flight.

KA-plop, Ka-plop, ka-plop, ka-plo, ka-pl, ka-p, ka-, ka, k, ....
A friend invited me to come over and use his silhouette range with steel plate backstops. We shot 22 LR at the test fixture from 40 meters. I don't think my test fixture was up to the task at hand and flexed too much being made out of wood. After a few smacks with the 22LR, I tried letting a hammer swing down and smack it while I was standing behind the steel backstop. The primer is peppered with marks but none looked sufficient to set it off. No dimple similar to a firing pin. Makes me wonder just how much force there is coming from a firing pin.
Time to come up with a better test fixture design. I have to rise to the challenge. This is personal now.

Vince, I was thinking along those lines, also. I will likely have to install the barrel back into the upper receiver to get proper alignment. May build a swinging hammer held up by a stick. shoot the stick and let the hammer swing down and dowel holding the nail. That way it won't be pointing at me when it goes off - I can mount it 90-degrees to the line of fire.

This is the most entertaining thread ever...
I hope in the end the aggravation is worth it and it gets freed up. Whatever you do, do video it! If it turns out badly, the entertainment factor around here is enough we could probably do a fundraiser for you to buy a new barrel. LOL
