I need help from you guys.
I shoot a Ruger Mark II Competition Target .22 with a Bushnell Trophy sight.
Shooting on a rest at 25 yards, this gun will shoot a group that a nickel will cover.

HOWEVER all of the shooters say that I should get a Smith Model 41 .22.
They say that my Mark II can't hold a candle to the 41.
This Thursday, a fellow shooter is bringing his 41 for me to try.

Am I being tempted just because I want another Pistol. Is the 41 so much better that I should get one, or am I being led to the dark side by the masses for no other reason than to just get my Wife pissed off at me once more for adding to my already overly large gun collection.

Well I had a S&W model 41 and it would not do any beter than your Ruger . Then I have tried the ruger and could not beat the S&W 41.
So I gather it was more the guy behind the trigger, not the gun !
Some times your shooting comes to a Point where for a time there is no improvement in groups no matter how much you practice . I think it because you do every thing the same , where maybe you should have some one looking At your form , your hold, grip, and your trigger finger , to advance .
I got into the 38Spl then 357 and finally 44 Mag .
The best way not to have your wife pissed off for buying yet another gun is to get her into the sport . It has worked 22 times so far for me. (Hint)

YEAP!!! I agree! And I have to say, you sure use some cuss words, you being an ordained member of the clergy and all! HA HA HA HA!!!!!!

Get a video camera and then tape yourself as you shoot a box of ammunition. Then do a self-critique! It will help you immensely!!!!

With a scoped Ruger Mk II, off a bench, I once shot a 2.1" 10-shot group at 100 yards. I just don't think anything else can do better (and I probably couldn't do it again!)

That said, there is ALWAYS room for another gun...

Thanks for the info. guys.
Actually, I'm shooting lights out with my Ruger.
There are times, when all the stars are aligned, that I can choose what side of the ten ring I will hit on, shooting at 25yds.
I was just hoping that someone would tell me that I can shoot better with the 41, but I see now, that maybe, I should can the Smith idea, and keep my Honey happy Very Happy

Ely, also the Model 41 comes in different barrellengths and even other ticknesses in grips. I know because I have 2 different ones of which I like the oldest (with ticker grips and longer barrel) most.
If you ever have the chance to try an FN Challenger or Medallist... they are the forefathers of the Buckkmarks and I'm sure you will love them.

And if one day you want to be able to chose what side to kiss of the previous hole... look out for that (very cheap, single shot) czech Drulov.

Eric, There are newer 41's and there are the originals !!!

If you can find one of the originals and are willing to drop the cash you'll have one of the best rimfire autos you can buy.

The Browning Medallist........yea !!! that one too !!!

I'm not saying the newer ones aren't any good.........just IMO the older ones are better !!!

If they were to build today's 41 the same way they built it back in the 50's and 60's it would probably cost way more than what it does !!!

Older firearms seem to function a lot smoother since they were hand fitted . Take an Marlin lever from the late forties and early fifties , and compare the action on both , and you will feel the differance .
So if a Smith did the final fitting to a hand gun it too would be slick.
The trigger to my older 41 was also gone over by a smith as well as the S& W revolvers . This final reworking of the trigger and tolerance's made for a very fine operating firearm . A far cry from when it left the factory.

Why?

I think a better question to ask would be...

Why not!

A shooting buddy brought his 41 to pistol league for me to shoot last night.
Beautiful gun, but I like my Stainless Ruger Mark II Competition just as well.
What I liked about the 41 was the its high quality, and it looks like a 1911.
However, unless a good deal comes up, I will stick with my Ruger.
I have never seen or heard of a Ruger having any problems, no matter how old, so saying the the 41's quality is better doesn't cut the straight face test.
The 41 is a better looking gun though.
Any gun that looks and feels like my beloved 1911, has my love.

Eric

Shoot a vintage High Standard Trophy Victor or even a Citation and see what you think about that... I prefer my High standards to ether the Ruger or the 41 although they are all good shootersin the right hands.
