I'm going to be the shooter in a coyote population thinning event this weekend. The ranch population is getting up there. When they start running in groups, I start thinning them out. Nothing quite like the shine of coyote eyes (from a few million candle power) in a fine Leupold scope.

Thanks guys!... Cary you have me jealous... coyote's are few and far between here in TN. I shot one yesterday in a cedar thicket... if you don't drop 'em in their tracks they're hard to find... I didn't get to recover this one... man I hate that... it was only a 40 yard shot. We can't hunt at night here either... they really try to stack the odds against us here! lol

We can hunt all non game animals at night with a spotlight here. My favorites are hogs and coyotes.

I don't mind a few coyotes on the ranch. They keep the rodent population down. I just don't want them running in pacts. The get brave and might try for a calf. However, these half blood Brahma cattle that I have will fight at the drop of a hat. Three young coyotes dug into my chicken house and killed half of my chickens last year, so I had to build a coyote-proof chicken house. I shot two out of the three as they ran for the brush. The third got away because I shot a strand of barbed wire and the round missed. At least I'm going to blame the miss on the wire.

The only problem that I'm not sure how to handle is that occasionally a mountain lion cross through the ranch and will scratch up one of these big cows. So far they have yet to kill one. They have caused them to stampede through fences like they weren't there. I really don't want to kill one (there's not that many), but I will if they start killing cattle.

Whats the law say about that in Texas ???

Texas game law:

Armadillos, Bobcats, Coyotes, Flying squirrels, Frogs, Ground squirrels, mountain lions, Porcupines, Prairie dogs, Rabbits, and Turtles are not game animals and may be hunted at any time. No licence required. Must be hunted on private property.

Feral hog, Aoudad sheep, Axis deer, Elk, Sika deer, Fallow deer, Blackbuck antelope, Nilgai antelope, Russian boar, exotic fowl (refers to any avian species that is not indigenous to this state, including ratites emu, ostrich, rhea, cassowary, etc.). There is no closed season or bag limit on these, but you must have a hunting licence and must be on private property.

Didn't realise the you had emu and cassowary over there Cary. Emu meat is nice...especially minced up and made into a pie. Never tried cassowary as they are protected out here. Also, they are a dangerous bird...more than one person has been killed by a cassowary in the wild out here.

With no season on elk and some deer mate, I'm surprised you don't have guys trying to get onto your properties to hunt them all the time. Fallow deer is nice eating...its sorta like the veal of the deer group.

Brad, your high quality craftsmanship always amazes me. Not only are your custom calls a beautiful work of art, but they are also capable of calling in coyotes too... always an added plus for us coyote hunters.

The only exotics that I've actually seen, in this area, is emu (somebody turned them loose on the road), russian boar, fallow deer, and one elk. North of me and to the south, you will find most of the exotic game animals. Years ago, ranchers released them for hunting, and they have spread...the same for wild hogs. I've never heard of a sighting of a cassowary, but if they are on the exotics list, someone has introduced them to the area. I've got friends in the hill country (about 80 miles north of me) that are over run with black buck and fallow deer. They hunt them year round. I don't keep up with the hunting ranches, but, I'm assuming that you can set up an exotics hunt just about anytime.

I just got me an oregon semi-exotic this am.One Wiley Coyote-that was'nt so wiley.225 yds with a 223,meant to be a head shot but misjudged yardage and turned out to be a neck shot.Full grown female-but not in winter prime pelt yet.My neighbor is calving in that pasture and my other neighbor is lambing in a pasture on the other side of my 20 so no hard feelings.I have shot 5 yoties from that window in the past year and a half,and the govt trapper usually takes about 25 from the sheep place next to me annually.Now we have a couple of big kitties(cougars to you down under guys)that have been working the area.I'm still waiting to see one of them!Brand new tag in my pocket with their name on it.Happy Sunday from the left coast!

Put some of that fallow meat in your freezer Cary...most pleasant mate.

TS...good work with the .223 mate...thats quite a shot. I often hear about yote pelts...are they good? Do they smell like dog though?
