I went to a gun show that was in town a couple of weeks ago, just to browse Angel
I came across a Ruger .44 Mag. Super Blackhawk with custom rosewood grips.
It also had the nicest trigger job that I have ever felt on a pistol.
My problem was, back when I was young, I owned this same model, and hated it with a passion. Too much kick with those western grips. I traded that hated gun to a buddy of mine for his pre '64 model '94.

SOooo--I offered the dealer a very low ball price, and he accepted it.
SOooo--here I am at the range, with this same model that 40 yrs before, I couldn't handle.
What happens?? I fall in love with the dang thing.
I have been shooting it off hand at 50 yds, and putting everything withing a 3-4"bull.
I even shot it off hand at 100 yards, and put my three shots inside a pie plate.

I have been using my reloads--240gr cast--6.5gr W-231--

I now plan to load for hunting-- Hornady 240gr HP/XTP's with H110 powder.
I want to keep velocity at around 1200fps.

Going back to my heading of this post.
This gun hasn't changed a lick over these years, but I have.
Back when I was 19, I thought that I knew everything.
I have learned these past weeks, that I wasn't quite as smart as I thought that I was.
40 years of shooting and reloading has put me full circle with this Pistol.

Now---How do I explain this to my 20 yr old Son Ben, who thinks that HE knows everything???
He will just have to wait 40 years to figure it out for himself I guess.

Eric

Congrats Padre!

I love the big SBH. Had a couple/few. First was a 3-screw 7.5". That gun has been the base of many off-shoots and 5-shots like a FA, etc.... stock trigger was good, slick them up and they can be made as light as you want for target or just right for hunting.

My 10.5", before I modified it and my eyes took a dump, with open sights was 200y gong wrecking machine- out of the box. At 100y a tuna can was toast from a rest. It will shoot as tight and the pilot can hold.

Factory stocks are great for hunting, but the pull is too short for target for me so I went to Houge on "Boomer".

Try some Trail Boss or Unique for your cast loads. Good volume and gentleish pressure curve if I recall right.
I prefer the 231 for plated or FMJ.
And IMR 800x & a non-mag primer with them XTP's should put you in the speed range ya want w/ less abuse to your cases etc. with that "short" tube. I'm getting excellent case life w/ no or very little trimming w/ 800x.
I'm sure you have a lot of recipes, but just a suggestion.

Speakin' of changing over the years, I never thought I'd do this to a pistol but after my eyes gave up on open sights this pistol became a dust collector, what's the point of shooting it close range, so, with that in mind I had it go through some changes, a LOT of changes...got the book tossed at it as a matter of fact. Laughing

I know of which you speak and I share in your jubilation. Cool

Sweet gun Stovepipe.

I'm lucky. My eyes seem to be holding up OK.
One in a while, I'll put on my Merrit Eye if I'm tired.

Thanks for the load info.
I have Trail Boss and Unique on hand, so it will be fun cooking up some new loads.

Eric
