Haven't loaded them yet but I was going to start with the Hornady 165 grain SST. Guess it depends on what you plan to hunt, I'm thinking whitetail.

Short barrel........ I'd stay on the lighter side !!!

If you like Barnes consider the 130gr.
Nosler Ballistic Tips and Hornady SST's have become well know for their accuracy/consistency.

The 168 grain Barnes TSX is my chosen hunting load. I use Varget for this bullet. I also found that I can use the Hornady A-Max in the same weight and with a grain less powder for accurate target shooting. I need to push them over 2500 fps but am still below max loads. Your faster twist may make a slower speed just as accurate or it may not.

Barnes bullets are great hunting bullets but they are a bit expensive and not as accurate/precise as a good target bullet. MacD had a good suggestion to use a match bullet with similar trajectory performance like the A-Max or Sierra Match King. Like chambered suggested, the 130gr Barnes TTSX is worthy of consideration. I used the the 130's in my .308 and was getting over 3100 fps with Varget (22" barrel). Lately, I have switched to Hornady GMX. They have been the most accurate of all bullets I have tried in my .270 and the 130gr was effective on elk. In .308 you have a choice of 150gr and 165gr. The 130gr TTSX or 150gr GMX should do everything you need and give you a bit more powder capacity. Remember monolithic bullets are slightly longer than their lead counterpart of the same weight.

As Pumpkin has said depends on what you are hunting??? My big bro has had great results for years with speer 130grn hps they expand very well and take smaller deer down like lightening. he uses them on anything up to big red deer (up to 180lb) eg he uses something 150-170grn during the rut for big stags. the 130grn barnes type of projectile are getting great reviews over here as they do the biz just that wee tad better.

bigJake, here is a link to Barnes loading data from their website. Its only a few loads but it will give you some velocity data to help with decision making. Hornady doesn't publish unique load data on their GMX bullets saying that load data for the equivalent BTHP is sufficient. Best to be conservative when starting with the GMX.

With the 1:10 twist you are good to go for anything up to 180gr. (180 is really pushing the limt with this small case though). I recomend the TTSX 150 for max zip, to a max of 168 if you expect breezy conditons and can handle more trajectory. Good BC's for the weight and the 150 is long and fast for it's lentgh compared to jacketed of the same lentgh.

know a guy here taking big pigs with the 168gr TSX from a 20" Rem. 700 w/ 1:12 TR. No failures and boy do they work. Bang plop head shots at approx, and, over 100y.

Sierra Gameking for hunting & Matchking for paper, with both being 150gr.
I haven't discerned any difference in POI between the two when loaded over the same charge of powder.
If you want heavier bullets, then both types are also available in 180gr.
I've found Sierra bullets to be more than accurate enough for my ability, with regular 1.5", 5 shot groups @ 200yds if I do my bit. This out of an unaltered Ruger Hawkeye (.270 though, not .308).

Have you guys or gals her anything about the barnes copper plating your barrel more then normal? I heard a guy say that he had run some barnes bullets and they copper plated his barrel and it took him 8 hours at the range to get it clean.

How long ago did that happen?!?! How long had it been since he cleaned his barrel before he shot the Barnes?!?

Barnes used to have a copper fouling issue with the older bullets but their newer bullet composition foul no more than copper jacketed lead-core bullets.

I shoot Barnes and Hornady copper bullets in my .270 with no copper fouling issue. I often shoot 80+ bullets between cleaning. Cleaning is normal. I use Boretech copper eliminator. It works great at removing copper and is not damaging the bore.

BTW, I cleaned a rifle for a friend who shot copper jacketed lead-core bullets. I had to flood the barrel and soak it over night two nights in a row to get it clean.

You will not have any copper fouling issues with Barnes or Hornady GMX bullets.

The Barnes bullets like to be back from the lands further than typical. I start them out 0.040" to 0.050" from the lands at first. Then after I find the optimum charge weight (OCW), I adjust the seating depth in and out to fine tune. The group size shrank when I found the right seating depth.
