|
I have a one year old Tradations Pursuit II XLT. I shoot Barnes 290 grain bullets with 120 grains of Buckhorn powder. I used Buckhorn powder last year and was 100% satisfied how it shot and I was able to re-load between shots without cleaning. Cleaned the rifle and put it in a moisture controlled gun safe after the season.
Day before season started it loaded fine and shot DEAD ON at 100 yards. Went to re-load like last year without cleaning and bullet stuck about 2 or 3 inches down. It took two of us to get it out. Took it indoors and cleaned the hell out of it. Loaded it and it shot great, but couldn't reload it again. I did get it to reload OK if I used a cleaning patch (both sides) and a dry patch (both sides).
I ended up not using it as I couldn't trust it. We only have a one weekend season so I switched to my shotgun.
I figure it can only be one of two things. Barrel or powder. Barrel looks OK after cleaning but I don't remember this much fouling with Buckhorn. Powder was stored inside in sealed container. Barrel looks OK after cleaning but not as good as it did last year. Last year it would BLIND YOU looking through it. This year it's just shinny!
I switched from 777 to Buckhorn because THIS was what I had problems with and the Buckhorn let me just reload in the field. They look entirely different, so I'm SURE it's the correct powder. I have more than one can and had the same results with both.

On my in-line, I use Buckhorn powder with cci-209M primers, any other primer using this gun with Buckhorn, 777 fouls up the barrel after one shot and have to clean it to reload.

I use the same primer. But I did try some others just to check. I have 3 breech plugs and tried them all. And yes they were clean when I tried them. The bullet/sabots were still in the unopened package. Has anyone ran into problems if the powder is more than a year old?

I am not a fan of the muzzle loader specific 209 primers. Myself and both of my buddies have had ignition problems with them so we stick to regular 209 primers. Also we have found that all of the newer powders are hygroscopic and you need to keep your powder as dry as dog doo doo. This problem will also effect the pellets so take care when transferring powder and make sure that you keep the containers sealed.
Iowa- I have the LT II and both my buddies have the XLT like you do.
Out of the 777, Shokeys Gold (save your money, p(ss poor product), and the IMR White Hot's that the White Hots weren't too bad a pellet/powder.

Try new powder from a sealed container. I've had similar problems using one year old 777 pellets that I didn't store properly.
