I was scanning the Midsouth Shooters Supply Catalog today and noticed a blurb that one of the primer sealants was used to seal muzzleloader nipples. That's a new one to me but how is it done? On the threads? On the cap when placed on the nipple in bad weather?

I have used cut pieces of surgical tubing to waterproof the cap on the nipple and that makes more sense than applying a sealer. The tubing is easy to remove and I bet the sealer makes cap removal a bear.

I use the tubing as well.

Sure sounds like some marketing person got the bright idea to market their primer sealers to a whole new group of people. I dont know how hard it would be to get a sealed cap off after firing... I bet is a bear to get an unfired one off regardless Smile

Howdy I haven't heard about about the sealer. I use the 209 primers now but when I used the #11s I use to use a sleeve ( like the surgical tubing ) but I bought them they were orange but I can't remember who made um wtf

Question...Are we sealing the nipple before we cap the rifle? Or are we sealing the nipple after we have capped the rifle? If memory serves me (and it usually does) CCI caps are already sealed...I've hunted the Oregon and Wahington Cascades and it "don't get no wetter then them thar mountains" and have never had a problem with ignition...That includes hands and knees through wet brush tracking an elusive Blacktail buck.

I thought it was sealing around the base of the cap where it meets the nipple. It would keep moisture from both entering and fouling the cap as well as getting the powder directly under the flashhole wet making for poor ignition.

The cap should do that as an umbrella over the nipple. As I said above. When I was in the Northwest I had no problem with ignition even in the rain...That's why I chose the T/C Hawken with a cap lock...Keeping the frizzen pan dry in that climate would have been nye onto imposible...

I've used was before to seal up a nipple... back when UT's ML seasons were in nov. Currently they are in mid Sept and its always 85 degrees and HOT when the season opens.

Give me hunting in Snow and cold any day.
