I came into some mileage reimbursement money and headed for a local gun shop. After wasting some time, I selected and excellent used Savage Model 119 in .270 Winchester with a Bushnell banner 3-9X scope. The rifle was cheap and I bought it. As I was leaving, a clerk showed me a Century Arms Sterling 9mm that was on sale. What to do? I managed to scape enough money together to put it on layaway. Good thing that I am on the road tomorrow to rack up some more mileage reimbursement money. I hate it when that happens. Take care...

Bushy,
I have other Savage Model 110 rifles and really like them. They shoot very well if I do my part. The only problem with the new used rifle were the terrible "no name" bases and rings which I quickly removed. I am putting Weaver bases and Weaver Quad-Lock Extensionn rings on the rifle when I get home tomorrow.

The ,270 Winchester is one of my favorite rounds and all of mine enjoy Hornady 139 grain Spire Points ahead of a moderate charge of IMR4350.

Take care...
Joe

Very good. I haven't heard any bad reports with the Savage in any caliber. Enjoy when you get home.

Joe, I'm sold on the weaver quad lock rings. They have held up on a few of my rifles, as good as the leupold rings I used to use, at 1/10 the price.

Joe, what do you want to do with the Sterling? Do you prefer a Sterling above a Stengun? I've seen one many years ago. It could shoot 1x, 3x and auto. Not easy to hold that gun steady while a pound of steel is traveling to the front... it shoots open bolt...
When you want to buy such a thing, better check the barrel. When I remember it right it takes only to remove 2 allan bolts at the front to take the barrel out. The one I saw did some time in the Mau-Mau war I think, because inside there were a lot of hair-bursts. That barrel was several times overheated in my opinion.
In my opinion it's something nice to collect, but to use there are far better things in 9 mm.

Many years ago, I spent quite some time around the L2A3 Sterling.
It's a far better SMG than the HK MP5 that replaced it.

We had a similar smg in the Aussie Army Mike. It was designated the F1 and like the Sterling fired 9mm ammunition. We rather un-affectionately called it the Spud Gun because it was consider to have no more power than the kids toy Spud Gun.

Having said that, I actually opened a few eyes one day when I fired 60 rounds in 3 round bursts at a piece of corrugated iron (approx 1 metre square) set up at 150 metres. Accuracy was around 85% and all rounds that hit penetrated the iron sheet. People were not only surprised at the accuracy, but also the power of the little 9mm round. Won a beer from my RSM with that demonstration.

Cheers, Vince

Here is an update. I found time today to field strip and clean the Sterling. It appears to be about new. The bore is perfect and I will go to the range tomorrow. I will sight in the Savage .270 at the same time. Take care...
