ask the us military if camo is needed considering they spend several billion dollars a year buying camo and training new troops how to use it properly.
for turkeys late season i use a giehly suit covering me completely. not only do the turkeys not see me but neither does anything else. ive had hen turkeys jump up onto my boot toe. talk about a odd look when you yell BOO.
camo is not designed to hide you from anything. it is a base that you use to hide yourself using other items in the wild. face paint and gloves with good camo clothes allows you to break your outline and blends you into your surroundings. thats why there are so many patterns. so you can choose the correct pattern for your area.
yes you can kill stupid game while wearing a santa suit, but how many world class bucks will you even see.
in my camo setup for my property i took a 10 point buck 3 years ago at 30 feet. he looked right at me then looked behind himself at a doe following. he never saw me!
the later in the season if hunting pressure has been high any game will spook at any thing thats not what they think its supposed to be so camo is designed so you look like what they dont fear. unhunted game you can almost pet. hard hunted game wont let you within a mile if you arent smarter than they are.
since i started wearing good camo in the woods my quality of game has increased drastically ie 3 10 point bucks and 4 tom turkeys with 15 inch beards in the last 6 years alone.

And, you can break your outline up with brush, tree's, or what ever else nature gives you.

I set with my back against a tree most times, or I have a portable pop up blind that my wife got me for christmas, other than that, I use little or no camo.

Gidday Crackshot, I reiterate what I said before.........

The idea of the different shapes or patterns on camo is to help the wearer blend in to the background.
As I remember there are a number of facets to camouflage:
Shape, Shine, Shadow, Size, Sillouette and Movement. You could add Smell to these as well.
Each an every one of these has an effect on whether or not you will be seen, by an animal. All of us use a form of camo at one time or another.
Using a blind is camo, getting behind a scrubby bush or pile of sticks etc is camo etc etc etc. Doing anything that breaks up the shape of, or hides, our body is camo. |
There are pros and cons to everything and there will always be an instance when things have happened that surprise us all. I'm also sure that there are any number of instances where camo hasn't helped, but I doubt that it would be a hindrance unless it goes against the facets of camouflage as above.
Any number of soldiers can tell you of times when were it not for effective camouflage he would not have been able to complete his mission effectively.
Damn, and I had put my soapbox away....I'm gonna burn it this time I think.

Most game animals see only black and white in living shades of gray...Humans see in technicolor. If you want to hide from another human you may have to wear camo. Although I have snuck upon a lot of humans with out it using natural vetitation and land contour plus stealth. Game animals on the other hand don't see you unless you give them a fixed silouette. Any color will do just as long as it breaks up your unnatural shape. And if you don't move they can't see you. (stealth) Camouflage is for sneaking up or hiding from the human enemy...My (not so) humble opinion...

Thats cool mate, assumed that you were huntin' critters and not man. I'm one of those oddball fellas....I get on famously with my out-laws, probably better than I do my own parents. Haven't got an old hag next door, just a young nubile early thirty something single girl...mmmm.
A good set of cams would allow you to creep up on the antis and PETA jerks ...frighten 11 sorts of crap out of them.

I just love it...You just have to explain why that hunter on the string titled "Butchering Deer" is in camo and wearing an orange hat and vest...I have seen this in the mountains here in the USSRofC and other places...I just can't help myself... Cut me a break....

I think Camo is a realy nice way for some one to throw away $$, I have taken Deer, Turkey, and an assortment of other game with out any camo.
I want any and all opinions. |
Here's a thought , with no camo how many deer do you not see and don't realize it, that you might see in full camo? You might have missed out on that monster buck! I don't spend a lot of money on my camo but I do wear it, I need all the help I can get.

CAMO! the ultimate waste of money. Take a shower w/scent free soap, 0 hunt like a predator "that we are"

im now disabled {ambulance wreck} i can no longer be a predator. i must ambush my game. camo allows me to blend into any background i expect to hunt.
camo clothes are not what camoflagie is. the clothes are just a base to allow you to blend better into your area.
a properly camoed hunter sitting still will have game/people walk within inches.
if you wear jeans and a nuetral shirt BUT shower with unscented soap you are still using camo {the soap} if you grow a beard just for deer/elk season so they dont see your face then your using camo.
every good hunter uses camo to some effect if its just using scent free soap or sitting in the brush.
a hunter who doesnt use some form of camo will starve.
