Ah, my old dog gets "dreadlocks" on his butt sometimes but we cut them off...

Yep Vince you nailed it. Dreads are associated with the Rastafarian religion.
Yes it is a religion based on Christianity it evolved in Ethiopia where the word Ras means 'father'. It also incorporates the smoking of cannabis which supposidly expands the mind allowing communication with God....the Jamacian slaves bought it with them in the 1700s during the slave trading days. Great mellow music by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Black Uriah and others.
Here in NZ some of our Rastas became feral and were a major crime and drug problem in the mid 80s in a little town called Ruatoria.
Still plenty of Natty Dreads around and we have one of the largest Reggae music concerts in the world every year in Rotorua called Ragamuffin.
You can also get surf dreads which are generally tighter and shorter. I can tell some really funny stories about the dreads and Police but I'll hold onto them for another day.

In Ethiopia Christians are all Orthodox traditionally any ways, with some Catholics in the mix.
It was created in the 1930's and used the King of Ethiopia as the second coming of Jesus. Because he was fighting with the Italians who were trying to take over the country in the 1930's. His original middle name was Tafari, and he being part of the nobility, he was titled Ras, similar to a Duke in English Royal Families, and typically they acted as a Governor of a region.
Bob Marley was converted to it by his wife, who claims to have became a believer after seeing Haile Selassie I display Stigmata when he went to visit Jamaica in the 1960's. Who afterwards tried to convert Rastafarians to the Orthodox Church by sending a Archbishop to Jamaica.
It was a Pan-African movement that turned itself into a religion to make it easier for people to think of it less of a political/social thing and more as religion.
But heck with dope and music, its easy for people to believe anything I guess, hence the girl in the picture.

She might be one that bow to the peer pressure to get unkempt and unwashed.
Such are the stupid young uns we got today.
Why cant they shave their heads bald or mohawk like we do when we are young?
