Are you talking about "Heineken"? Smile

Never met a "trappist" (and I don't mean the monk, only their beer. I think there are 6 of them in Belgium and 1 in Holland)

Heineken used to be a very nice imported beer, but like a lot of beers it went the way of being produced locally...spoiled the taste.

Now...Trappist...that is a nice beer. I can buy Dubbel, ('Dubbels' are understood to be a fairly strong (6%-8% ABV) brown ale), Tripel (Tripels as a style are generally beers with an alcohol content ranging from 8% to 10% ABV) and Quadrupel, the name Koningshoeven gave to a La Trappe ale they brew which is stronger than their tripel.

Vince, now you're getting somewhere. My favorit is the dark Grimbergen. But that's still an every-day beer. When you go somewhat more expensive, try Deus, that's a beer that should be completely treated as champagne, they even send this beer up to the Champagne region to have it properly bottled.

Now there is a nice book called "All Belgian Beers"... it's a kind of bible telling 1214 pages with a description of more than 500 beers... its written in English, French and Flemish... I should try to get a copy of this in Stefanie's suitcase...

That Grimbergen sounds like it is a most desirable beer mate...will have to do a search of the importers for a bottle or two.

Chimay also makes what appears to be some good beers.

I found a range of Trappist beers available:

The official Trappist breweries produce the following beers for consumption:-

Achel sells Blonde (8% ABV), Bruin (8% ABV), Extra Blonde (10% ABV), Extra Bruin (10% ABV).

Chimay sells Red Label (dark, 7% ABV), White Label (Blonde/Tripel, ABV 8%) and Blue Label (dark, 9% ABV).

Engelszell sells Gregorius (dark, 9.7%) and Benno (amber, 7%)

Koningshoeven sells:
La Trappe Blond (6.5% ABV)
La Trappe Dubbel (7% ABV)
La Trappe Isid'or (7.5% ABV)
La Trappe Tripel (8% ABV)
La Trappe Quadrupel (10% ABV)
La Trappe Quadrupel Oak Aged (10% ABV)
La Trappe Witte Trappist (5.5% ABV)
La Trappe Bockbier (7% ABV) (Seasonal)
La Trappe PUUR (4.7% ABV) (organic)

Orval sells a "unique"[11] dry hopped 6.2% amber ale.

Rochefort sells three dark ales, "6" (7.5% ABV). "8" (9.2% ABV) and "10" (11.3% ABV).

Westmalle sells Dubbel (7% ABV) and Tripel (9.5% ABV),

Westvleteren sells Green Cap or Blonde, (5.8% ABV), Blue Cap (dark, 8% ABV) and Yellow Cap (dark, 10.2% ABV).

Note the alcohol content of some of these beers...most exciting methinks.

Vince, you better stop before you get a strange desire to visit Belgium.

BTW, Westvleteren brews occasionally a far stronger beer. But these monks are not allowed to make profit, so they only do this when their chapel needs a new roof or so... one would ruin a roof for lesser reasons Smile

Compared to your country Belgium is only a small city, so all the breweries are local...
you had to start earlier because now it would kill you Smile

when you want to start: next Theusday my oldest daughter is organising the anual local beer tasting, this time there will be a beer-alphabet, starting with "Arend" and ending with "Zwet.be" (arend = eagle // zwet = dialect for black)
So this are only 26 beers and only a few will be tough enough to reach the end Smile

Sounds like it would be one helluva challenge mate...but an honourable one to finish. Wish I could be there.
