I have a couple RCBS Uniflow powder measurers and am considering getting the micrometer insert for them. I have read the Lee Perfect powder measurer works quite well with stick powders. The uniflow works well with ball and flake powder just fine right now. I can buy 2 of the lee powder measurers for the price of one micrometer insert. I read the reviews and it sounds as though the micrometer insert is a must for the uniflow. I am making a purchase from Midwayusa and plan on making another likely in January but I am trying to figure out what to get for this purchase.

I am getting a Lee Challenger Breech Lock Single Stage Press, Hornady LNL Bullet Comparator Basic Set with 6 Inserts, and I am considering getting the powder baffle for my Uniflows. Just trying to decide what to get with these things to make it a worthwhile order.

The advantage of the micrometer adjustment is that you are supposed to be able to record the setting and then use it in the future without having to go through the setup...... I found that I get better accuracy going through my set-up and I almost never have the same micrometer "setting" from one time to another.
It will get you close but you still have to make the final adjustments if you want accuracy.

you need to go to some high-end powder flows if you want to just set the micro meter to the same setting every time without having to recheck. I have a friend with a set-up like that. Very nice but expensive.

I trickle every load so no micrometer adjustment necessary.

Besides IMO those micrometer stuff only good for ball powders, they are not so accurate on stick or flake.

I have "reworked both my powder measures and added an "upper hopper" to keep the flow consistent. I adjust my measure by throwing ten charges into the pan so I can get the accuracy I want ....+/- .01 grain.

That is my "hunting", plinking and target loads.

As you noted, the Lee measure is exceptionally well suited for IMR or "stick" type powders. It works very well with flake powders also. It is not a good match for spherical or "ball" powders since I always experience leakage around the drum with these powders. I always fall back on my 40-some year old Ohaus for those powders. It also has a micrometer type adjustment, but I have never trusted it for settings.

I use both the perfect powder measure and the autodisk pro. Haven't had any leakage issues yet. The micrometer insert for the autodisk works okay but takes some technique to get it accurate. I find that when I set it a bit less than what I have recorded in my notes for a specific powder and load then back the screw just to the right setting it gives the correct drop. I also tap the hopper slightly to ensure each drop is complete and no bridging has taken place. If I am loading for finer accuracy I drop low and trickle up. Just a reminder, always adjust on an empty recepticle. While not important when increasing the setting, it is when decreasing as you otherwise are compressing powder with the micrometer.

If your looking for repeatability take a measurement of the adjustment screw and record it with your load data.

If anyone's interested I have a pdf file on how to make your own powder baffle for your powder measures. It has a bunch of templates for lots of sizes of cylinders. PM me an e-mail address and I'll send it.

Well then send me your e-mail address, I'll send you the file. You can make them out of milk carton plastic, you can use aluminum roof flashing maybe even a coke can, won't cost you any shipping or time waiting.
