I'd like to make a reed deer call to bring in Roebucks in Scotland.
Anyone out there who can point me in the right direction, please?

Welcome aboard billpayer...your screen name sums up many of us here mate. Anyway, grab a beer and pull up a stump. Not sure how long it will take, but our resident pom, English Mike of Pomgolia should have a bit of knowledge about this one.

I would recommend Buttolo. When you have time to practice take the "Mundblatter", when you want to go in short time take such a black one with the rubber ball.
Remember: never leave that black thing in your car while the sun is shining, it cannot stand the heat.

By the way: don't expect it to function all year. Here it's only effective a few days in July/August and even then only a few moments during the day. So it's definitly not so that you can "feep" 3 times and all the roebucks will present themselves on your door. In my opinion when the ratio male/female is not +/- 1 you will soon discover that bucks don't like your music whatever song you're playing...

Aloysius...How come I have one leg getting longer. I kind feel a slight tugging on my left leg. Could be just my imagination though.

Is it possible you have a Pinoccio-leg? (Or how do you name that lieing wooden kid who's nose was growing with each lie?)

Or am I missing something to understand your reply?

And I was rather serious this time. When I see somebody wanting to make a deer call for roebuck in Scotland in November, then I'm also more than interested. I do have several instruments to call roedeer and I do recommend the Buttolo, but I only use it when the rut is on. The rut for roedeer is here in July/August and even then such calls only are effective during some moments.
And I know there is theoretically a second rut for roedeer about 2 months later (so about now), but at this moment hunting season is closed here for roedeer, so nobody will try to feep them now.
And the rut for roedeer in Scotland can happen 1 or 2 weeks later or earlier than here, but when Billpayer can make a call that can be used this time of the year (to call roedeer, not wild boar which could also like a piece of roekids), well then I'm more than interested to know what kind of noise he's going to produce...

Never seen hunting like that. Hear in Missouri and other mid west states they ambush from a tree stand, but no calls.

Aloysious...Sure did get my German Spitz excited when he heard that call. He was looking for the sound all around the computer and finally wanted outside to see if it was there. Finially found it on the computer and tried to get into the monitor. Noisy little criter.

Seems we all live and learn. That was incredible the way the roedeer came to the call.

As a piper, the sound of the call sounded sort of familiar, albeit more highly pitched than I am used to using. The tenor drone reed in a set if bagpipes emits a similar sound at a deeper pitch...wonder if a smaller reed would emit a higher pitch, something that would be suitable as a call.

A drone reed is simply a hollow bamboo cane, sealed at one end and with a tongue cut into the body. The diameter of the cane and the length of the tongue determine the pitch. The length of the tongue is governed by a sliding bridle, although the length of the tongue has only minimal effect on the pitch, it's more the size of the cane. In the pic below, the sealed end is to the left and the open end is on the right, with the dark cord wrap.

Pumpkin, I didn't know one could buy the ingredients to make your own call. Sounds fun.

I'm almost sure you'll find this so interesting that you're going to look till the finish, but deer is right at the beginning and I have a weak spot for Mr. Roy Lupton. I love how he uses his airrifles on rats and rabbits, or hunts foxes, or ...

Warning: when in future you hear funny sounds in the woods of Australia or the States, please have a good look before you shoot, there has to be a good reason why you don't use these calls...
better safe than sorry.
