I love history that is awsome. You own a fishing tackle shop? I'll have questions for you.

Been fishing since I was a nipper & in the retail tackle business 16 years.
Ask away, though I might not have all the answers due to differences in species & methods.

Well actually I'm interested in surf perch fishing but know nothing about it. Do they travel up and down the coast and you're just lucky to find them?, or is there an actual season that is best (spawn, or summer vs winter). I've found out what to use for bait but don't know what to look for as far as weather conditions or for instance we have sandy beaches, so do I look for a pebble beach or rock outcrops? Any knowledge in this realm?

Strictly a Pacific Ocean fish I'm afraid, so I know nothing at all about them.
The perch we have here is a freshwater fish of a different species entirely: Perca fluviatilis.

Suz,
Watch for signs of feeder fish and gulls feeding on them. There will always be predators where there are feeder fish.
Should be best at high slack tides but almost as good at the low slack tides if you can access the water.

Well I'll be darned. I wish you much fun and success there EMike. Just be sure to have a bottle of the good stuff laying around for those cool evenings when light is fading.
Enjoy the place.

Good on ya Mike, Looks like a nice spot.
Built two houses, owned 4 (not at the same time), the boss is getting more and more settled here in Cambridge so we may not ever leave at this rate, actually we will one day own a house by the beach again….retirement dream…. 15 + years down the track

How close to the ocean are you EMike?

That's actually the Irish Sea coast. Head 70 miles west & you hit Ireland.
My fishing tackle shop's just about dead centre in the right side of the aerial photo.
The harbour is the one John Paul Jones attacked during the War of Independence.
George Washington's maternal grandmother is buried in the churchyard in the town centre.
My new home is about three miles directly east, in a place called Cleator Moor. |
WOW - A nice location like that AND you have a FISHING TACKLE SHOP ?!!?!
You're sitting in the catbird seat, Mike ! WooHoo

Give local bait shops a call, Suz. They are always ready to tell you what fish run when, what baits to use, where and how to fish, and more. Also online you will find fishing maps of good spots, where to park, etc. Often parking is limited, but a knock on the door, a courteous chat, and a promise to clean up the area will usually get you permission to access some great spots that others miss.

Sometimes it's not so much fun when you own the place.
It's as if our version of the IRS thinks small businesses are a bottomless pit from which to extract money.
I reckon I'm 95% done with the move, having cleared out both upstairs rooms, the loft & most of downstairs.
Took all the glass out the greenhouse yesterday & ground off the bolts holding the frame down. Going to improvise a rack on top of the truck to carry the frame, as it's firmly bolted together aluminium & doesn't weigh more than 100lbs.
Should get some odd looks carrying it.
Roll on this time next week, as one way or another, I'll be DONE with the old place.

...and done.
Took up the carpets & drove them to the dump (along with about a ton of other "no longer required" stuff) as I've had the new place fitted with new carpets.
Lifted a couple of tons of flagstones as they're too flippin' expensive to leave behind & gave my old stove to the guy next door.
I'm on my fourth half litre of beer & just beginning to get rehydrated as it's been sunny ALL Easter - an unheard of occurrence here in Cumbria.
NOW I can get on with the rest of my life.
