So far I have been using 150 - 180 gn for 308 Win loads and they are quite adequate for almost every animal I shot at.
Last month a mate of mine that is quitting shooting due to age and health gave me a couple of boxes of Sierra #2110 - 110 grains HP.
Now I never shoot with 110 grains on 308 Win,
I believe with my load the projectile would travel at 2700 fps (1800 ft lbs) at the muzzle and would go down to about 1400 fps (1000 ft lbs) at 150 meters.

Would this be good enough for deer size animal within 100 meters? Or should I only reserve these for foxes and goats?

gelandangan, from the pictures I found on the Speer website, these aren't typical HPs. Instead of the copper jacket forming the hollow point, the front/nose of the bullet is all lead with an indentation. I've never tested bullets like this. I should probablly do just fine with a broadside lung shot out to 100 yards. Just 2700 fps from a 308? I get that velocity with 110gr bullets out of the smaller 6.8 case.

Slim, My apologies, they are not SPEER, they are Sierra #2110

The 2700 fps (theoretical) is a starting load I am planning to start with, I am sure I can get up to about 3100-ish eventually.

Gelan...a mate gave me a half box of Speer 110gr .308 bullets and I have loaded some in my 30.30 with some success. It is my understanding that these bullets are intended or designed for the M1 Carbine. As a Varminter bullet, I would safely assume that they would be rather explosive...I do know that they are rather devastating on roos at 50 metres.

I am thinking that unless loaded down a bit in the .308 they will more than likely "grenade" on a thick skinned animal. I think they would be very good goat or fox "medicine" mate.

I guess you are right Vince.

By the way I also received a couple boxes of of Sierra 2100 RN, Looks pretty similar to yours but without the nice little hole in the nose.
Ok I guess 100 meters would not be too much to ask for these projectiles.

great for fallow, goats or wallabies...now go to a ttsx or similar in 110grn on the other hand and you have good deer medicine without recoil.

The Sierra HP you show looks similar to the Hornady 87gn Varmint that I load in my .243 WIN. They are extremely accurate mate, I had no problems hitting the RAM at 500 yards on the rifle silhouette range on damn near every shot with the .243 Weatherby. OK, I was using an improvised rest, not shooting off-hand, but the accuracy was there.

I don't think you will have any problems with thems boolits on fox or goat critters mate. Maybe with a bit of distance their tendency to "blow up" on the target will ease a tad, allowing for a bit more penetration...depending of course on the velocity.

blowing up on a thin-skin deer with a broadside lung shot should drop them in their tracks.

From Sierra's website:

"There is only one 30 caliber Varminter rifle bullet in Sierra's line. This 110 grain #2110 Hollow Point also is the largest caliber Varminter bullet in Sierra's line. It will withstand exceptionally high velocities and can be loaded in all 30 caliber cartridges, including magnums. It is extremely accurate and has been used by some Hunter Benchrest competitors. It offers explosive expansion on varmints and small game at velocities achievable with the full range of 30 caliber cartridges. This is an ideal bullet to choose for off-season practice on varmints with any 30 caliber hunting rifle."

My personal opinion, I wouldn't use it on deer sized critters.

My personal opinion, I wouldn't use it on deer sized critters.

And I think you're right. I think I used them many years ago in a .300 WM for roedeer and it's OK when you're only hitting lungs without touching any bones...
But at the low speed Gelandagan is usually working, it might be very good. I never tried that.

LOL, Ok loaded a few batches for trial, hopefully can get away to the range this weekend.
Bloody range that is nearby is now closed, now I got to go to a range that is 70 km away.

Hornaday has a 110 Spire point 30 cal too that would fit your bill.

Thanks Dawgdad, I usually use 150 gn or over for 308 loads.
And most of them are cast and capped with gas check.

These lightweight projectors are given to me by a mate, they are not what I usually use.

I used the 110 V-max in 30-06 at 3400 fps with great results on coyotes. no exit wound. Bang Flop. Actually the one in the avatar photo was taken with the 110 V-max in the 06 at 462 yards.

I will be trying them in the .308 at about that same speed too.
