I have a lead to an almost unlimited supply of 6.5X55 once fired Norma Brass at a decent price. I checked my records and I don't seem to have used Norma brass before. Anyone care to share their experience with it?

when I first started reloading it was THE brass to use. waaay back then it was headstamped NORMA Re to let you know it was reloadable
my advice
grab as much of it as you can and go to it with a will.
very consistent and Slimjim will tell you having all your brass the same is a good thing

I have used it and liked it. No problems. I usually use Winchester or Remington brass because I get them for free. All the best...

Norma makes brass for Weatherby !!!
My dad always used the factory Weatherby stamped brass without issue.
IMO it's some of the best stuff you can buy.

Never had a problem with Norma brass in my 340 wby. Hand-loaded hot or mild the brass (case) is easy to work with especially when you resize, norma brass is noted for being softer than others.

Thanks for the comments. I ordered 200 which should last me awhile. I also ordered some bullets made by PRVI. They are FMJBT. Hard to find this type from other makers. Now to find the powder. Only two stores in the local area so it may take some waiting unless I get lucky.

Yes. I also ordered some Hornady Match at 140 BTHP. I am trying to match the Swedish target loading for my CG63 rifle but having some issues. The diopter sight is marked 830m/s which I believe from research means it is calibrated for a load that produces about 2723 fps. To get that speed with available powders I have to exceed SAAMI pressure specs but not the higher CIP ones for the 6.5x55 in a small ring M96 action. I have read that the lower SAAMI limits are there because the Norwegian Krag rifles have weaker receivers. So far my research indicates the receiver is strong enough and the barrel is meduim weight so also quite strong. The same receivers were used with identical barrels but chambered for the 7.62x51 NATO at the same factory. I had hoped to use Varget but may have to go with a slower powder in order to keep peak pressures down. I need to do a lot more research before I start load development.

Hodgdon's 2015 Annual Manual shows a load with a 140 gr Speer bullet using a MAX of 46.3 grains of IMR 4831 for 2700 ft/sec from a 24" barrel. Pressure listed as 45,400 CUP. There are several loads for 129 gr bullets that are over 2700 ft/sec.

Ramshot manual v4.5 shows their Magnum powder with 140g Hornady Interlock @ 52.4g producing 2,712 fps or a 140g Nosler Partition @ 49.8g producing 2,778 fps. However, this is listed at the higher CIP standard of 55,000 PSI and not the SAAMI standard of 46,000 CUP / 51,000 PSI.
I shoot a strong, modern actioned CZ 550 so I don't stress about using 55K PSI loads. For an older M96 you might still be fine, but caution wouldn't be unwarranted either.

I have considered this also but the only reference I can find was the use of the military 139 grain Spitzer. In one reference it was stated that the rate of twist in the CG63 barrels was reduced from the original military ones to improve accuracy with lighter bullets. If someone has a good reference on what was used for match shooting I would be really appreciative.
The whole SAAMI versus CIP differences are a study in themselves. As most are aware all rifles must be proof tested to 125% by law in most European countries. The proof testing of my rifle was done on its original acceptance in 1906 and again when it was rebarrelled in 1973. The original proof was approximately 65k psi and the second, if they use the current standard, was closer to 69k psi. Over the last week I have read more about number of lugs and gas porting than I thought existed. If I can secure some nice slow powder and some decent weather I hope to start shooting loads wiithin the SAAMI range and work up toward the target velocity while watching for pressure signs.
