Somebody got my credit card number and did their Christmas shopping with it. I just got my statement in the mail today and it had $2400 on it, none of which is mine. They did some children's clothing and Disney shopping and then used the postal service to mail it all off. The lady at the credit card office said one of the transactions was a return, so I guess they needed some cash too. It was spread out over a month's time and they could have gotten a lot more than they did, I guess I'm lucky in that regard. Anyway the company said they would immediately stop my card, investigate the charges and then give me credit for the charges and a new card.

Pretty painless operation, I hope nothing else (other credit cards) happens in the mean time. My temper went from home-at-last to WTF real quick over that one. Computer and on-line shopping/banking what a convenience (when you're using someone else's money).

Happened to me in Dec.

Someone used my debit card after I used it in a certain local store to buy Christmas presents a few years ago. Since then I only use a credit card for purchases because that prevents a direct link to my checking account.

happened to a family member here in NZ when buying scope from USA, young tellar decided to use card details for a couple of grand worth of stuff.....big hu ha over it.

At least they will refund you Suz which is a bonus. My daughter got skimmed at an ATM a couple of years ago, but the bank was right on top of it and the card was cancelled immediately and she was refunded.

They found that out here (in Australia) the dirtbags that were doing all these scams were Eastern European crime gangs...mainly Romanian.

I've only had my bank account hacked, twice. I could pay any of my credit card bills. The credit card companies were very understanding, thankfully.

It was the bank that brought it to my attention.

They're investigating it, but they said they would credit my account and then give me a new number. If all checks out, I won't pay anything, they'll pursue the thief and somehow get their money back (I guess). The billing I got is due on Feb. 2nd and they said to call customer service on Feb. 1st and see if they have credited me or not. I think I'll put a limit on my credit cards in the future. I'll also look into getting more secure with my internet buying.

This just brings up a whole bunch of issues I need address so I don't get instantly wiped out. I'm really not all that reckless with my money but I need to pay more attention to my internet transactions and I know my last transaction with this credit card was over the cell phone (which is blasted all over the freekin world I suppose).

The current use of the Paypass contact less payment system made it easy for someone with some know how to copy your card without having to physically hold it or even see it.
This is currently a flaw in the banking system that banks does not have an answer for (yet).
Until they can find a way to prevent copying of cards, if the purchases shown on the records does not fall into your purchasing profile, the bank will quietly absorb the losses, at least thats what I read so far.
It is now imperative to check every line of your banking statement for such purchases.
They are generally of small amount so the paypass system would approve the purchase without the need of a PIN or signature.

In any case, it is us the consumer that finally bear the losses when the banks increases their fees and charges.

similar to the scam where cashier adds $20 cash out to your card then gives it to mate/friend who comes into shop later, they split cash after work.
the flash as you go cards have got to be easy as to pilfer...look at what they did to skim ATM machines and these things work just by being close!!!!

Well! My wife's credit card was declined yesterday! When we checked today someone had used it to make a $1 "purchase" somewhere, triggering the bank's fraud detection folks. The last place she'd used it was Amazon, buying through them from four different sellers (cheap gifts). New cards on the way...
