Vince, I have the Lyman mould and I'm not so excited about the performance of the slug on wood, but I never tried different alloys, always pure lead. And I also have some tests in my mind: such as different conicals from the BP-rifle, even lead balls, with and without a small piece of rope glued in the bottom to give it more a dartarrow-performance. I like them slugs with the wad attached to the bottom om the slug, in my opinion it helps to stabilize things.
There are still many tests to do in this kind af shooting...

A slug gives up its energy quickly once it hits the chest of a moose. Even at 20 meters it won't normally exit the other side. When it hits a rib it is likely to come apart. This is from my own experience. The same slug shot into a 4 inch piece of softwood holds together much better. I suppose the tight channel of the wood keeps it from separating into pieces. All the slugs I have used have been factory so I do not know their hardness.

Yep...no shortage of fun to be had testing slugs Aloys, then of course there is the different alloys. We are experimenting with different alloys for rifles. So far we leaning very strongly towards an alloy with a hardness of 10 BHN. Making an alloy of 10 parts lead and 1 part Linotype meets this hardness. We are also looking at trying 20 parts lead to 1 part Linotype.

I'll let you know how things go after I am able to get to the range.

Never shot anything other than paper and deer with a slug gun.....told me everything I needed to know !!!

Wouldn't think twice about taking a 125 yard shot with my old smoothbore loaded with Winchester 1oz slugs.
Had more confidence in that gun than some rifles I've owned over the years.
Spend enough time with a smoothy and you may find yourself questioning the myths that surround them.

Vince
Have you tried water quenching or heat treating? I have some .454 bullets made from wheel weight lead ingots that I water quenched as I cast the bullets. I don't have a hardness tester but using the "fingernail" test they seem to be harder than my air cooled ones using the same melt. I loaded them up for both. 45 Colt and. 45 ACP but haven't fired them yet. Sometime in the future I intend to try casting for the 6.5. I haven't calculated the hardness of bullets needed for the pressures since I need a hardness tester. This article, www.lasc.us/HeatTreat.htm refers as does the link I posted earlier to Glen Fryxell's book. There is also an excellent discussion of bullet hardness and its relationship to pressure found in the second edition of Lee's handbook.

It is almost impossible to get linotype alloy here. I do add tin solder to my pot to improve casting but my only practical option to adjust hardness is quenching or treating.
