not duck season Mate.
went for wander with my Big Bro up in my usual public land spot. we were intending to do a big walk up onto tops around and down but didnt get that far. Meg was being a good lass for me and staying 5-10yards in front of us and stopping when I gave quiet whistle reminder. we had stag stomp off at one stage and big whiff of stag scent came up to us...Meg wanted to GO but stopped when I told her too and came back to me...on went long line/drag line.I took it off soon after.
we had gone further 500ish up hill and she started to get really keen DOWN WIND,so I called her in and put line back on her. we had stalked probably a further 50 yards when I looked down and spotted a big hind looking at me, up with .223 phiit went 50grn TTSX and down she went (got to love that suppressor) 2nd younger hind jumped up in same spot but I let her go. got Meg to lead me into dead deer before big pats for her being her first(of many we hope) deer in the bush.
easy as carry with two guys shareing boned out venni between us.
Big Bro is going to drop deer heart of to our teenage daughter later in week on his long drive home to middle of north island. Rachel sure has missed being home for that treat so we made sure to keep this one for her to fry up in her birthday prezzy skillet.

That picture is only worth 100 words. Can you make it bigger?

There, now I see the .223 with the silencer! You are getting a lot of venison. I'm getting ready to buy a freezer for this hunting season. Bet you have two! Dove season starts next week. Lots of fun but they don't take up much room.

Im reluctant to type this for two reasons
#1 didnt take photos
#2 some of you others are having a real bum season

but I will risk it

took a young Swedish farming lad who lives locally out for a hunt on the weekend,I broke all the rules and took him to my best spot first time out with him,but sometimes I reckon you need a bit of trust, besides which Meg gave him the tail wag seal of approval (others get growled at) so I figured Kristian must be ok.
yaked on trip up and had cuppa while setting up tent then off for a wee wander, being midday I wasnt expecting too much but being overcast with low whispy clouds gave a little hope of finding a dumb one out in open.
nothing spotted on first few clearings but heaps of sign..poohs everywhere, and Megs nose was doing a fair bit of twitching, she took us on big circle down through fern and back into clearing we had been through earlier, the guys in the know tell me that if Meg wants to take me somewhere I HAVE TO go..so she learns to trust me and vice versa
we carried on up to jelly fern clearings, again heaps of sign but no deer home,I re took lead from there as his TC bolt action .270 is long and heavy and the scope although flash as Michael Jackson and would be great in open country it just wouldnt cut it in thick scrub where my x39mm with wee M8 4X is at home
the wee patch of fern and crap we were stalking through Ive been "had" by deer on about 6 other occasions,I know they hang out there but havent managed to get drop on them before...well guys with Meg getting really keen I was on alert when 3 reds broke from above us and crossed from right to left about 50 yards out through beech trees bush lawyer and fern, the last one was slower and I managed to swing through and let drive..a solid whack was heard and I called shot high and too far back but animal was heard to go down and was making noise in one small area of ferns.I suggested we wait a minute or two before following up to allow it to settle/bleed a bit. I being tootoo bug dropped round from chamber and replaced with a ballistic tip in case of longer head shot being on cards( as they accurate) popped mag back in and stood up
CRASH as 4th deer yip the 4th deer broke down hill in same place and STOPPED to check out why his buddy was waiting in one of few windows of view I had...the post of M8 settled in crease of shoulder and 125 grns of Mr Noslers finest did the rest.straight down at the shot
we then let Meg lead us in the rest of the way aware 1st deer was still maybe mobile and close..Meg was fair busting a gut to get in there but I held her on long lead and watched carefully. we spotted 1st deer doing Stevie Wonder impersonation (head and neck doing sideways sway) and I administered lead disprin labotamy to end his woes
two dead button spikers 10' apart greeted us waaahooo
Kristian got knife out and dealt to one while I did the other "that ones yours Mate" I said "its the Kiwi way we hunt together and share the spoils"
we did the meat on skin thing debone and carried them out like that...lots of sweating and more than a little cursing followed (why couldnt the plurry poms build wire fences like everyone else instead of bringing over mongrel gorse)
the beer tasted great when we got back to wagon thats for sure.
another morning hunt didnt show up anymore animals but I let young fella (25) loose on his own once we got to good safe area where I knew he could find way out easy.
so a bit of a gamble but good outcome all around, I will take him hunting any time a plurry good guy.
tried some venni tonight eye fillets and wee bit of back strap...delishymo.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but...Meg is a dog, right?

You guys are allowed to hunt deer with dogs?
