Well I got out yesterday morning and went to my club and shot shotgun for the first time since my 2nd rh shoulder repair back in may.
Probably should have gone earlier, I am after all the club shotgun captain.
I shot 21 out of 25, and it didnt feel too bad afterwards.
That was yesterday, this morning felt like someone smacked it with a hammer, stiff as buggery with the sore bit right under the scar.
Will now be "improving" the padding over the area and see how that goes.
I havent a lot of wiggle room left with this shoulder if it ever needs another repair, so will see how it goes, might also have to wimp out and by some 24 gram shells.
It's not the age it's the "milage"........... Confused

Good stuff Pete. Olympians use 24gram shells with good success, so there's nothing wrong with them. I load 26 grams of #7.5 over the top of 19 grains of Promo for a nice load at 1300 fps. Might be a bit stout for that shoulder though mate. My shooting buddy has experimented with loads down as low as 22 grams in a 12 gauge and he was able to break 25, although it pays to have a good 'first barrel' because 22 grams in a second barrel is hard work.

I bought a Beretta hunting shirt a couple of years ago and it came with a shoulder pad. Coupled up with a good butt stock recoil pad it should be good for you mate.

Beretta Gel Tec Recoil Pad

Yeah, I'm wondering how long to wait, before using anything bigger than a .22 too. Chest is still damn sore and Doc says the sternum is wired well but still not set. Sorry about your shoulder dch4, hope it continues to heal well and you can get back to it. Sure don't want to overdo it though and wind up needing more surgery.

Bushy,
The other one got rebuilt 4 years ago.
Left hand shooting with dominate right eye, I resemble a gumby pretzel, just not right.

Lester,
Give it time to heal, give it a light work out and see how feels.
I knew the shoulder wasnt going to like shotgun when the massive recoil of the .222 gave it a bit of a twinge back in August.
You look after yourself.
Cheers

Glad to hear that you are back in the bang bang again Pete.

And Lester, a 22 LR is better than nothing.

Both of you will be back before you know it.

Vince,
I went out and purchased a shoulder protector from QGE, cost zero, seems I had enough points from previous purchases. Should also help with rifles as it straps on not fit into a jacket.
The trick seems to be getting it to stay where its needed, which is the boney bit on the front of the shoulder.
Time will tell.

Try a bit of the 'grippy' stuff they use in caravan cupboards or for gripping jars to open, mate. Sew a piece on the inside of the shoulder protector...a couple of stiches should hold it in place ok.

I use this stuff for all sorts of things. I put a small square of it down on the bench to hold the stone in place when sharpening knives, I sewed a square of it on the outside of my bagpipe bag to help hold it in place when it was slipping down a little, and of course SWMBO can use it in the kitchen when opening tight jars.

Maybe it can sound stupid or strange, but try to keep your neck warm and your right elbow high (when you're right handed!), if possible above shoulder-level.

and when nothing helps, there's always a .410 waiting for your call...
or even .410-inserts when you want to use your beloved shotgun.

Aloys
Keeping the neck warm isnt an issue here at the moment, I think it was 28 deg C on Sunday. From here on it'll probably be over 30 by 8:30 am.
I do have neck issues, it cramps in colder weather, a legacy from radiation treatment for throat cancer.

.410 eh, I'm NOT that far gone, yet.
They cost an absolute fortune to feed down here.

No remarks on the elbow?
So you already know that a high elbow also helps to drink beer?
Liquid most of the times likes to flow downhill... Smile

Even when it's 28-30 °C, one shouldn't let the horse running without a proper warming up. What's good for a horse cannot be bad for my neck!

and .410? Doesn't Elvis use reloaded .410's to shoot geese?
Or is my memory playing with me again?

Yep, know about the elbow, both in shooting and drinking.

The .410 over here is expensive, both to buy and to buy ammo for.
Simple economies of scale, everyone buys 12g.
The same with 28 and 20g.
