sorry boss missed your question.
we have elk/wapiti and the herd is located in Fiordland
Fiordland is tiger country/really big steep hills and huge valleys carved by glaciers , you need to be really well prepared/fit and have the very very best in wet weather gear and tentage.
you can get 50cms/20" of rain in a single day, from memory they get something like 5mtrs of rain annually
the really big/mature bulls aren't dumb and know to stay in the deep bush/remote hard to get to areas
the biggest threat to the herd is cross breeding with red deer as a red stag will mature and start breeding/fighting for hinds/cows at 2-3 year old whereas wap wait another couple before getting among the ladies.
for me to target a wap I would need to set aside a week and need to get plurry fit and do some serious planning.

I think a good number of deer species were released in Aus & NZ in the late 1800's and only a few species thrived/survived.
Aus has the bullet proof Sambar, Reds, Rusa, Fallow, Chital & Hog
though Wapiti are listed on the "R" Licence returns [NSW]
Aus Hog deer are one of the only available locations in the world to hunt them Not sure what hybrids exist but Sambar do cross with Rusa

I know the feeling. It's like kicking a penalty at soccers. Everybody expects you make that goal, but you still have to do it and a little less concentration (because it seems too easy) and you're in for a few sleepless nights where you see that picture again and again...
Well, or you didn't deserve it this time or the 6x6 deserved it more to live longer... sometimes the hunt takes 5 minutes, sometimes it takes 5 weeks... that's hunting.
Better luck next time (maybe burn a candle for our St.-Hubertus?)

Even the best of shots will pull one occasionally mate...it happens. As Elvis said...go back and get the bugger mate...chances are he hasn't gone too far, his harem is no doubt around there.
