Last week I was working as a Range Safety Officer when a club member asked if I wanted some empty shotgun shells. He was cleaning up after a three-gun shoot and knew I reloaded shotshells. I readily agreed and he reappeared with a pallet of plastic tubs and totes of mixed empty shells that had to number between 10 and 15 thousand cases. I set up my operation in a pole storage building and started sorting things out. I was only interested in Remington STS, Nitro 27 and Premier RXP cases and Winchester AA empties. Two hours later I had two clay pigeon boxes full of these cases. Looks like a lifetime supply. I hate it when that happens. Anyone need empty shotshell cases? The club holds these shoots every month. All the best...

I sure wish I was closer by, I would gladly take a bunch of those empty hulls! With the weather not being so hot right now, I'm already thinking about the shells I need to load before duck/goose season...

If you have a Clay Target Club nearby mate, they will always have heaps of hulls at the end of a day’s shooting, and would usually be happy to give them away.

As an aside, the plastic hulls can be chomped up into tiny pieces and used in vibrator style case cleaners. It’s not quite as good as walnut or corn media, but it works.

Hi Vince,

the clay target clubs I've been to around here are not too friendly, and not too welcoming to strangers or outsiders!

I have wanted to join a trap and skeet club for years, but the ones I've been to want an arm and both legs to let you join!

And hulls!?!? They would just as soon burn them before they let somebody outside the club have them.

there was something on news the other day about reusing plastic in making concrete......makes sense if you think about it...replace some or all the stone and sand with plastic chips...lighter and argueable just as strong in compression.... weird DS. they must be a funny bunch in your neck of the woods as most clay bird clubs are always looking for new members.

That is really strange mate. As Elvis said...Skeet and Trap Clubs out here are very welcoming, to the point of openly welcoming people for "try before you buy" shoots to see if they like the sport.

Having said that, I know that Skeet shooters in the US use all calibre shotguns... .410, 20g, 28g and 12g. There is a pretty reasonable market for once fired hulls in the US, especially the 410, 20's and 28's, so maybe they have a deal with someone to collect and sort the hulls to sell.

What hulls do you normally reload David...Winchester Compression or AA hulls, Remington STS hulls, Federal paper hulls or the two piece hulls of various makes (usually European brands)?

It usually comes down to $$$ and if you don't have a lot of it, you don't belong there! So that let's me out!

Vince - since I reload more for steel shot than anything else, my favorite hull to reload is 12 ga. Federal Gold Medal.

Our gun range has a main range with berms at 100 yard increments out to 430 yards, then 9 separate bays from 25 to 100 yards, each separated with 15 foot high earth berms. We have 5 Trap fields and 4 Skeet fields.

Annual family memberships are $50.

The Trap and Skeet ranges are open to the public on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings.

Any shells on the ground are free to anyone who wants to pick them up.

$50 membership? That is 1960 pricing in the Dallas-Fort Worth area

If they were $50 around here, I would have two or three memberships!

The range I go to (well, try to go to...) is $125/year now. Joining the club is now $400 for the first year! Personally I think that's a huge mistake.

Mine cost $125.00 per year as well. It's a nice range with way more than I need. I wish they would let me pay half, since I'll never use the trap, sporting clays, or any of the archery stuff.

Our gun club dues are $30 a year for an adults age 18 and above and $5 a year for juniors under age 18. Two years ago as club president I raised the adult dues from $20 a year to $30 and was nearly attacked. We have 200 acres of land, 6 electric traps, a skeet range, an international trap range, 10 handgun ranges, 4 rifle ranges and 5,000 members. We have daily guest passes and offer a number of shooting events open to the public. So it depends. All the best...
