1894 was the 30/30's time, by then the west was won and lost!
I hunt for meat, the rack hurts my teeth!

The Winchester 1873 was the one that won the west I belive. Still a Winchester Lever action. Smile

And the 30-30, and the 45-70 are the 2 rounds that come to mind for lever actions my mistake. Smile

The .45-70 rifle cartridge was developed at the U.S. Army's Springfield Armory for use in the Springfield Model 1873 .45 caliber rifle, known to collectors (but never to the Army) as the "Trapdoor Springfield." The new cartridge was a replacement for the stop-gap .50-70 cartridge which had been adopted in 1866, one year after the end of the American Civil War.

The .30-30 Winchester/.30 Winchester Center Fire/7.62X51Rmm cartridge was first marketed in early 1895 for the Winchester Model 1894 lever-action rifle.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30-30

Winchester 1873’s – Manufactured from 1873 to 1919, these were offered in .32, .38, and .44 calibers. The model 1873 Winchester is widely know as "The Gun That Won The West" because it's production run was so high that it became the everyman rifle of choice.

Actually....the muzzleloading 12&10 gauge shot gun was determind to have won the west as far as civillians go, the 45-70 springfield trap door was the west winner as far as the cavalry goes, The indians had most of the repeaters and they lost!

You've gotten only one deer in your life? How many years have you been hunting?

Aside from the fact that the "horns" don't get tender, I've never found a recipie for them.

I took my oldest boy hunting a couple of times and he seen a good buck, he said was an 8 point but never shot it. He never really was interested in it so I didn't push the issue. I also took my daughter out with me. She seen a nice deer but didn't tell me (we were sitting back to back against a tree) until we left the woods. Now I'm starting over with a new family, at 50 no less, and hopefully my 5 year old will get the hunting bug. We watch the outdoor channel together sometimes. and he seems to have some interest.

By the way, I hunt for the meat also. I remember, I think it was in '93, I had no job, very little money and was raising my first 2 kids by myself. Deer meat is ALL we had for meat and all I had was an old Bear Whitetail 2 bow to hunt with, got 7 that year.

Why would anyone want to put a scope on a lever action "saddle gun"?
Seems a waste of time seeing how they were made for quick shooting.

Living where I do in western Canada, I get the best of both worlds. Long seasons, plenty of tags (both draw & over the counter), low hunting pressure and friendly ranchers who readily grant access to respectful hunters. Since the family loves wild meat, meat hunting comes first. Once the doe tags are filled, I have the luxury of poking around looking for horns. More often than not the buck tags get hung on the Xmas tree, but a bad day in the field always beats a good one in the office.

I strictly hunt for the meat andthe enjoyment of the hunt!! If I shoot a real nice bull or buck than great but I am just as happy with a cow or a doe.

At the cost of meat at the supermarket I hunt for food. Over $2 a pound for ground beef? That is rediculous. I have already paid for my guns and ammo, and my license doesn't cost much now that I am an old man, so game is finally a cheap way to eat. My wife likes venison too and guests just think it is really GOOD beef. I just wish I was in one of those states where you could take two or three deer a year. A deer, even a good size muley doesn't go very far. I need some more meat and a bigger freezer. It will hold two deer easily - even with the bread, pork and poultry that we keep in it now but if I could get more deer, a couple of elk and a few bears, I would definitely need more room.
