Wildcatt old mate.....I think that you misunderstood what I said. Military rounds are designed to kill....no question of that. However, a wounded soldier is a more costly situation as far as the opposing Army is concerned. How or why do I know this....26 years as an Infantry soldier in the aussie Army.

If you read the Hague Conventions, and in particular the "Declaration of St. Petersburg; November 29 1868" it covers the reasons behind the banning of "dum dum" bullets.

Declaration of St. Petersburg; November 29 1868

quote - That the only legitimate object which States should endeavour to accomplish during war is to weaken the military forges(sic) of the enemy;

That for this purpose it is sufficient to disable the greatest possible number of men;
- unquote.

The Hague Convention is a little more vague in its writing, although the intent is obvious. "Declaration on the Use of Bullets Which Expand or Flatten Easily in the Human Body; July 29, 1899"

Declaration on the Use of Bullets Which Expand or Flatten Easily in the Human Body; July 29, 1899

Another interesting read is "Enhancing the M16/M4". I understand that this appears to be only a Forum and not Law, however it is an interesting and enlightening read nontheless.

Enhancing the M16/M4

To really elucidate this subject, lets forget the designated calibre of the round in its entirety for a second; just think of the PROJECTILE. Very Happy

I don't disagree that a military FMJ or BALL PROJECTILE is capable of killing a deer sized animal, in fact I have used surplus military 30.06 ammunition for hunting in the past. However, it is not the most efficient PROJECTILE to use for this task....a purpose dsigned hunting PROJECTILE is the most efficient at achieving this.

Anywayz guys....I reckon that this particular thread could go on forever and regardless of anything else, strong personal beliefs will pretty much never change.

Consequently, I propose that we all agree to disagree and stop "floggin' a dead horse". Now, whose shout is it for the beer ???? Very Happy Cheers Laughing

Cheers, Vince

I've been sitting at my reloading bench doing a little reloading for a possible rabbit and wild dog hunting trip thuis weekend. Whilst sitting there I've been serenaded by the rhythmic and satisfying sounds of my little yeast beasties working away industriously making my next batch of home brew beer....all 23 litres of it. Should be ready to drink in about 4 weeks. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

The 7.62x39 is very capable of killing a deer at moderate ranges. I would not hesitate to hunt with one myself. I have killed deer with cartridges as small as a .222 rem. If the placement is correct you can kill a deer with a 22lr quite humanely, i know because my brother did it for years to provide meat for our family when I was young. I will say this, I only shoot deer with good shot placement whether I am using my .222 rem or my 7mm rem mag. This way I know that if the bullet fails to perform as expected I will still kill the deer humanely. There are a lot of great bullets out there that should do the job. Don't let a few people discourage you from using what should be an adequate deer cartridge. Just make sure you know your gun well and shoot it a lot with your reloads to be sure your ammo is consistent, once you have done this you should be good to go.

Well, I heard that the AK has also been used by poachers to harvest ivory and rhino horns.

yip it sure got sidetracked in the middle reaches of the discussion!!!!
I believe the cartridge at 150 yrds is as capable with the same projectile as a .308 winchester at 250yrds or a .300 superdupergarycooperwhambambalumer is at 400yrds. as the same projectile doing the same speed doesnt give a monkeys about what started it out on the journey rifling spin aside. and the comparison with the 30/30 is not a good one unless you want to load the 30/30 with a 123grn pointed projectile and the 7.62x39 with a 170grn flat nose. now in that case the 30/30 comes out on top hands down.
alot has been written here in NZ in recent times on calibres/cartridges for the young hunter and this round was put up there with the best AS LONG AS RANGE OF 150 YRDS was taken as practicle maximum (yes Iknow I tried to stretch my barrel unsucessfully) the .222rem and .223 where given similar guidelines.

Well I built my AR-15 around the 7.62x39 and I handload my bullets, the rifle is very accurate and I'm sure deer killing would be a piece of cake with it. In the woods where i hunt there's not too many places you could shoot 150yds and frankly after 150yds I don't really trust my ability off-hand shooting anyway.

Let us separate caliber and rifle. Hornady does not recommend their 7.62x39 123 grain SST offering for medium sized game which inludes deer. Loaded with a 150 grain takes it just within the deer category. There are better choices for deer but a good hunter/shot can deliver the meat.

Rifles are another issue. The SKS rifles weigh 8.5 #'s. compared to say a Marlin that comes in at about 7. Non-military ammo (FMJ is illegal for hunting in many jurisdictions) isn't always easy to find and tends to be expensive. Military weapons are held to a lower accuracy requirement than sporting rifles although some can be as accurate. My own experience is that volume of fire is more important in the typical close quarters of most firefights. Specialized rifles are preferred for longer range engagements. Can you hunt with an SKS or AK47? I am sure you can just as you can hunt with shotgun but there are are better choices.

Having said that it isn't the best choice for hunting I still am about to order this one. (Waiting till SWMBO) gets over my last purchase:-)

Shocked black gun..... Embarassed oh no its a black gun!!!!!
Very Happy sure it will work fine Very Happy
the origonal question was about the cartridge NOT the rifle it was fired out of.
a little like asking is a .45 long colt good for deer at 50 yrds then saying heck no those .410 shotguns with smoothbores arent accurate enough Very Happy
