Smile I would go with the tang/peep sight. If you use teh offset mount it makes the rifle IMO very clumsey to carry and shoot. Even though the venreable 30-30 may not be a long range round any offset will effect your POI at any range you have not sighted in for. If you have sighted in for say 75 yards and you shoot at 150 you will be off to the left at that range, how much I cannot tell you but it is like mounting a scope on say an AR-15's carry handle. once sighted in at a certain range the changes at diffrent ranges are much more drastic than if mounted on a newer flattop.

I have an old Savage 99 that was my Great Grandfather's, it has an original Tang Sight and even with my eyes going I love it. Something about a peep helps you focus on the front sight. Plus you keep the rifle original.

BTW - the 30-30 in "Factory" loadings is a great shorter range cartridge. It also makes a fantastic longer range handgun cartridge when loaded with 125 - 150 Nosler BTs. I have a few whitetails taken a bit over 200 yards with my Contender in this caliber. It has enough oommphh to completly pass through and destroy the lungs on those I've shot so I know it has the power. The flat points loaded by the factory loose velocity very fast. Wink

Gidday Laser,

One of my favourite guns is my Model 94 in 30.30, it is a top eject although I have no idea what year model it is.

My eyes turned to crap about 8 years ago (caused me to give up pistol target shooting) so I need an optical sight on my firearms. A friend in Missouri, who has since passed (God rest her beautiful soul), sold me a 40mm Pro Point and got me a XS Sight sight mount ramp for this rifle. I fitted the lot here in Australia and I am about as happy as a pig in mud! Easy to see and as accurate as the open sights, more so if I do my part. I also find shooting both eyes open great for target acquisition and also for running shots on pigs.

I shoot mainly RCBS cast 150gn GC bullets and they do the job nicely on pretty well anything out to 100yds.

Good luck finding a sight system that suits you.

Vince

PS How can I find out the vintage of my Model 94?

Vince...E-mail me the first four numbers and I can look it up. Mine is 1608XXX and was manufactured in 1948. If it has the long forearm it was made in1950 or before. In 1951 they (Winchester in the hopes of saving a little money) shortened the forearm stock.

Thanks for that Bushmaster, it is very much appreciated.

I think mine must be a fairly late model because the serial number is as follows:

4212xxx

Have the remains of another Winchester tucked away. It was found in the rainforest in Northern Australia. It appears to have been through a fire or similar and is basically in pieces. Calibre...unknown at this time, although it is small maybe 32.20 or similar...still trying to identify the serial number.

Cheers, Vince

Vince...According to my references number 4,000,000 was manufactured in 1974. So at a guess i would put yours at around 1975 to 76 +/- a year or two. My reference is American Rifleman printed in Dec, 1993.

Thanks for that Bushmaster.....you are a champion. Didn't realise my Mod 94 was so "young" as the best accuracy I have been able to achieve is 6" - 8" at 100 metres. Thought I may have got better considering I could achieve about 6" at 200 metres with my TC Contender in 30.30 WIN.

Oh well, I will continue to develop loads for the Mod 94 and if nothing else I will continue to get a lot of enjoyment doing the load development and testing.

Cheers, Vince

Hey Vince...Try 32 grains of W-748 under a 170 grain Speer FNSP and a WLR or CCI-200 inside a Remington case. I'm shooting 3 rounds into a 3 inch dot at 100 yards (not sure what that is in metres)
