Does anyone own a 300wsm and what is you opinion of it? My son is looking to buy a new rifle and is thinking of a Browning white gold medallion in this caliber. How is the accuracy? The speed in the loading manuals looks good. Any help would be appreciated.
Don

My son bought a Savage 300WSM a couple of years ago. I've got to shoot it alot, and I also reload for it. His Savage his very accurate and do like the accutrigger. Todate he's shot 2 elk and 2 deer with it. I didn't think the recoil is all that bad. I certainly would buy one If I couldn't borrow his anymore. Thumbs up for it.--tr

I have a Browning white gold medallion chambered in 300 win mag, and I love it.

Thanks guys. You have just verified the articles I have read on this round. I don't always trust the gun writers as they may be biased to the manufacturer.

300WSM

Very Happy Absolutely love it, Every day it shoots better than the last.
Tikka of course,
180grn partitions with Reloader 22 (work your own load) mines 71grn
Very Happy Got into trouble with the last test, came home with only one hole in
target, Wife wanted to know where I had been for the rest of the day!
150grn Sierras performed best at starting loads for WIN760
(66.5grns @ 1/2 inch) Testing 200grners was a bit tiring though. Ouch!

Very Happy pitt55, i have a 300win mag and love it too. if i wouldn't have built the 300mag i would have built the 300wsm. it would fit my mauser m98 better, less modifications to do. i use 180gr nos bt's love em. enjoy the rifle and have good hunts with it. dave Very Happy

Fireball 3, I think getting the wsm to feed in a mauser 98 is much more involved than the 300win mag. You would have to do everything that you would to get the win mag to function(extractor, feed rails, boltface), but on the wsm you have to deal with the slighlty rebated rim and ejecting it which is tricky as I understand it. I was pondering building a wsm on an intermediate length 98, my smith cured me of that in one discussion.

i couldn't say on that. about the rebate rim i mean. i've never seen one, just heard about them what i was talking about is that i had to change the ramp to the chamber. it was tricky as i dont have a mill or lathe. it was done all by hand. i was thinking of the shorter case lenght. dave .ps, from what i've heard it's a fine cartridge. I recently bought a Bennelli R1 in 300WSM (only because I wanted an auto loader) and it's allright doesn't kick anywhere near as bad as a 300 win mag I had a few years back.
It doesnt like premium factory loads but handloading has brought those little holes closer together.
It seems to like winchester W760 and Dupont IMR4350, in that order and the new Barnes tsx bullets 165 gr/ 168gr and good old Nosler Partitions 180gr

In my experience controlled round feed action (like 98's) feed the rebated rims the best. 425 w.r. is the first that comes to mind also the .284 based cartridges, so that shouldn't be a factor. There are jigs that allow a mill to open up the feed lips on the receiver but these too can be done by hand by a competent gunsmith. I've found that modifying the follower works pretty good for straight cases like improved and modern designs that don't taper like the old mauser cases and is cheap to replace if you mess up. alot of guys would rather start with an action that already works with a family of cartridges though and the extra that action costs might cover the labor that they would charge for the mod. I think the 300's in any magnum are awesome cartridges w\ the 180 and heavier bullets.
