Well first thing first welcome to the forums Iblong,
Secondly, the accuracy of a rifle in my opinion is more based on the person shooting it and the position he is shooting it from, you can take a 1000 yard bench rest rifle that can group 4" at 1000 yards and give it to me and it just might group 4" at 200 yards.
Shotguns generally will work well within the "kill zone" (about 6") on most animals within 50 yards. And depending on its accuracy (how badly the bore is worn etc) and how well you shoot shotguns you might get good groups as far as 100 yards.
One thing though, I never shot a single shot shotgun but I've been told they have a kick to them moreso then heavier shotguns so you may want to consider that if your alittle recoil sensitive.

What manufacturer and calibre is your smoke pole...???
I have a Thompson/Center Hawkin .50 that is as accurate as my .30-30 at 100 yards...And that is using Black powder (90 to 95 grains) and a patched round ball. At 1900 fps it will do the job...

Howdy. I have a H@R ULTRA Slug Gun in 12 gauge. With the Hornady 300 gr SST's you can cover 3 shots with a quarter at 75 yds. It's the most accurate slug gun I have ever seen. I have bin very impressed with it.

I own a NEF Survivor for 2 months now, and I am ordering up a Buffalo Classic.
As far as I know, them guns are very nicely presented for the price asked.
Just a tip I picked up somewhere.. do not stop pulling the trigger right after it breaks,
if you do, the transfer bar may not rise enough to give you reliable primer ignition.
And thus your accuracy may suffer from this.

I have a friend that swears by his NEF slug gun. I have fired it, and was impressed with it's accuracy. 2" groups @ 100 yards with most ammo we tried. His showed a preference for 385 gr. Winchester Supreme Partition Gold Sabots (1.20" avg 5 shot group) and 1 oz. Brenneke K.O Sabot (1.38" avg. 5 shot group). If not for my Mossberg shooting slightly better than that (1.05 avg 5 shot group)with Winchester ammo, I would go get one myself. Be advised, however, that it will make it's presence known. Kicks like the proverbial MULE, my friends wife kills deer consistenly with his, as long as he sights it in. She claims she never feels recoil while shooting @ deer, but cant shoot for s**t from the bench.

Well kick my Western hide...That was the manufacturer. Afraid my knowledge of "Slug Guns" is rather slim to nil...We just don't use them out west. Guess I had better get some education on them now that I'm in the mid-west.

Iblong,
I feel that you probably have one of the most accurate slug guns ever produced, bar none...
I have owned and shot several others of the H&R Ultra slug guns in 12 ga. and have never been dissapointed...
The most accurate loads that we have found for any of the H&R ultra slug guns has been the FEDERAL HYDRA SHOK saboted slug loads. some guns like the 3" a little better than the 2 3/4" and vise versa...
There are a couple of things that we do to the H&R Ultra slug guns before we ever fire them and that includes recrowning the muzzle, trigger jobs, pillar and epoxy bed the forend and finally we modify the 3-screw scope base to 5-screws and drill and tap the barrel to match...
With all things said and done, we have NEVER had one of these guns that would not shoot under 2" at 100 yards and on a very consistant basis and that's for 5-shots. Most 3-shot groups run around and inch to maybe an inch and a half...
Even without doing all the extras that we do, I have yet to see one of these guns that would not shoot well under 3" at 100 yards using the FEDERAL HYDRA SHOK ammunition. Our second favorite load has been the Hornady Y2K loading and it too will shoot under 2" at 100 yards...
With our guns sighted 2" high at 100 yards, it's not but a few inches low at 200 yards and at that distance, a broadside shot will blow a hole a big as a tennis ball through both shoulders on a 200 pound deer...
Yep, if you are going to shoot a slug gun, you got the best when you got your H&R Ultra slug gun....

sounds like H&R/NEF got it all together so I wentdown to check if they had one avaulable downtown. Found the catalog listed a modle NEF77210 with a thumbhole stock and a octagon barrel but I can't seem to confirm that it's actually available at this time. Does anyone know anything about this model?
Also noticed a H&R Ultra Hunter (light barrel) with a black composite stock on the used rack, Looks Brand new (probably a banquet gun) and they only want $129.00 for. WOW. But how do the lite barrels shoot? Is a 12 ga. Can I put a conventional scope on the lite one without cutting my eyebrow from the recoil?
First time I used one of these forums - your comments will be a big help.
Thanks in advance.
