As promised on another thread...here's my "field report" on Hoppe's Elite....A copper remover that I tried just for gits and shiggles...and will stick with from now on....
'Course this whole field test thing is a result of a bunch of discussion here on what's the best and the badest.......so humor me by reading on and take it for what it's worth....my own assessment of a product with zero invested other than I got a clean gun quick........you might like it too.
Set up...1 Ruger #1 in quarterbore-06...timer set at 30 minutes for countdown....1 spray bottle of Elite, 1 spray can of carb cleaner, a few patches, a bronze brush and a bore mop.
Step one...3 patches wet with carb cleaner pushed thru the bore...time down to 28:46......
Step two....soak the bore mop down with elite.......
vigorously attack the bore with multiple strokes, the Elite will form a blue foam at the muzzle...you are done when the mop appears white again....
Step three......wet a bronze bristle brush with elite and stroke the bore a bunch of times......time now down to 26:13.....
Step four....run patches wet with carb cleaner down the bore until you get a clean one.......
Here's the first one......
Time to the clean one is down to 23:04.....note the time line of patches from beginning to now, the very last patch is a dry one layed over the breech and pushed thru.......clean and white.
Step five....oiled the bore....
Step six...oiling the chamber....shocking ain't it?
Time down to 20:35 for a clean and oiled rifle, less than 10 minutes consumed...I'm sure I wasted a few seconds snapping all these pictures....<grin>

Something oddly similar about step 6.
I did enjoy the view out of the window.
Oh yeah the Elite is good stuff. I have been using TM solution from Sinclair. Just soak 2 patches in TM Solution and run down the bore, go do something else for about a half hour. Cme back, run a brush down the bore a couple times then patches till clean.

Nicely done! I just noticed the Elite line recently and was wondering if it was foo-foo marketing, or an honest attempt at an improvement. It seem that often "new and improved" means they have found a cheaper way to make it.
Good report!

Thanks.
I realy like the way you set this up, easy to follow and well done.
I had read this post a while back.
after doing some better cleaning on my guns after reading more post from this site. I had noticed more of a greenish / bueish color on the cleaning patches.
after seeing that, I was sure , I was not cleaning my guns nearly good enough.
I had to come back and search for this post again .
Thanks.
I also want to thank PaulS for introducing me to some of the best home made gun oil. that he suggested to make. very easy and simple.
mix 50/50
dextron automatic transmission oil
Kerosine.
Thanks PualS

If you are low on money make your own gun oil:
Take 50/50 Dextron Automatic Transmission Oil / kerosine.
If you get a quart of each it will last you a lifetime, or you can sell it to your friends at $1 for a four once bottle. That way you can make a profit.
DON'T use engine oil in your gun. Engine oil will react with atmospheric water and make clay, and most motor oils have quantities of metal in it to add to the lubrication properties under heat and pressure.
Your gun will never get hot enough or see the pressure where the oil is, to make it work. In your gun it just causes problems. |

Ripper,
you're welcome but I can't take the credit. Ed Harris and a chemist friend of his (if memory serves) developed the formula while working on a cleaner for black-powder gun bores. The oil is the first part of the process in making "Ed's Red" bore cleaner. It is a water free way to clean your black-powder bores. Ed deserves all the credit as it was his persistance that rewarded us all with both products. He never made any money off the formula as far as I know. He is a true shooter and is willing to share his oil and cleaner with us. Ed's Red has no copper cleaning ability so it is not good for those of us who use copper jacketed ammo but if you are shooting lead bullets and / or black-powder then it is a gift to get away from hot water baths for your guns.

The Hoppes Elite line is essentially the same product as M-Pro 7.Hoppes approached Pantheon Chemical Company(who make M-pro 7)and asked them to develope a "Green"line of Gun maintenance and cleaning products that were non-toxic,biodegradable,non-carcinogenic etc.,Hoppes Elite being the result.

Well atleast its non-toxic makes it alittle safer around kids I'd imagine then sweet sweet Hoppes No9.
