Been following this thread with interest and now have a bit of concern. Not because I disagree with the procedures indicated to polish a nice piece of timber and bring out its natural beauty, but more because of the antagonism that comes across in some of the posts.

C'mon guys....let's be a little more accepting of other's methods, styles and experiences, even if we disagree with it. I am sure that each and every man, or lady, that polishes a fine piece of wood does so according to the way his or her parents, or mentor, taught. To say that someone is wrong is saying the person, or mentor, they looked up to, taught them incorrectly and that upsets people.....especially if that mentor is a much loved and missed parent. No one practise is really wrong, just different from the way others may do it.

Now, as for what you have all said....it is very interesting and informative. I have always thought that "boiled linseed" was exactly that....linseed placed on heat and bought to the boil, not "cooked" or "treated" with acid. You learn something new everyday. I remember my very early days in the military when we had contact with the old Lee Enfield .303 and then the FAL, or SLR as we called it, and the linseed treated stocks that they used. On a hot day the oil would almost ooze from the stock.....no at all nice. Sad
I am trying a little experiment with linseed "bought to the boil" and soaked into a piece of hickory. I have used it to replace a hard rubber wear block on a chain tensioner on a 1968 model Bultaco Sherpa S offroad motorcycle I have....should be interesting to see how it stands up to wear and tear and the elements.

Wildswalker......I must take umbrage with you over your treatment of the fine Single Malt Scotch Whisky you drink. Shocked Shocked Polluting the delicate and subtle flavours of a fine single malt Scotch by putting ICE in it....sacrilege Sir....it should only be sipped as God and the maker intended...straight, as it came from the distillery. Very Happy Very Happy Laughing

Seriously though mate, I love the job you have done on your rifle stocks. They are nothing short of beautiful. Your quality of workmanship is evident. I only wish I had the ability, and tools, to complete a project as you have. The chequering you are doing looks as damn near perfect as I can tell and the job of inletting the ebony fore end onto the stock is a magnificent. I take it that this is not a hobby for you, but something you do for a living?

Anywayz friends, keep up the great work you are all doing on your stocks and keep passing on the how's and why's so dummies like me can learn a bit more.
Very Happy Very Happy Mr. Green Cheers

Vince.....

With the Blood that flows in me veins 'tis safe to say I'd not walk away from a fight on my worst day.....

The same Blood puts a grin on me face and outstreches me hand when it's over...win or lose.

On the whiskey....

I tend to have very little whiskey etiquette beyond knowing it ain't for spilling on the floor, or lighting up a campfire. Whiskey just won't be wasted on my watch........

I do gun work for others on the Friends and Family Plan, and haven't ever gone Pro. I'm probably not good enough at it anyway, though I did make decent winter wages building furniture in my shop years back. I do have several friends still totin' hunting blades I made and gave to 'em, just part of being a friend I'd guess.

After reading through this thread I feel its important to remind people of the website rules here, namely:

Quote::
Forums:

1 Treat others with respect.
2 No Threats, Racist or Derogatory comments towards others.

We have some incredibly gifted and knowledgeable people that visit HuntingNut. Most of the time great help and advice are offered to those asking for it. Care must be given however, that critiques or advice on how someone is doing something, isn't taken to a personal level.

I see nothing wrong with telling someone they are doing something wrong or improper, as long as its not made personal.

Some of the comments in this thread are blatantly derogatory and kills the spirit of what would have otherwise, been a really informative thread. Two master craftsmen can have different, yet legitimate ways of accomplishing a task even though they differ completely in their methods.

In the end people that come here just want to share in the comradiery and discussion about a hobby we love, firearms and shooting. Lets leave the bickering, and personal attacks out of it please.

Swampfox and Wildswalker:
Thanks! That is just the information I was looking for!
ARTICLES? Who'd a thunk! I have a LOT or catch up reading to do---after said grips are finished, of course. Very Happy
Rough-out complete. They fit the gun, and everything works like it ought. Now to bring them down to final size, and begin finish sanding. Boy, hand sanders are a goodness! Smile

In the spirit (spirits?) of most of the posts, a phillips screwdriver is supposed to relieve stress...that's 1/2 vodka and 1/2 Milk of Magnesia! Very Happy

Well said Dallan. I support your comments 1000%.

Gidday Wilds. Mate, you sound a little like me in some respects....although I won my last fight by 300 yards and 4 back fences. Very Happy Laughing Can't see the sense in getting into a scrap unless its to defend myself or family physically. I, like yourself, have a mixture of Scottish and Irish blood...my Mother comes from the Clan Fraser and my Grandfather on Dad's side was born in Newry, Ireland....hence my love of a fine whisky.

Did I read you right when you said you drop a shot of McClellands into a beer ??? Hm, now that is different. I've had scotch mixed with milk, with water, with dry ginger ale, with coke, with ice, but never with beer. Now, a nice smooth overproof dark rum dropped into a beer (Depth Charge) is very nice. I must try the scotch idea....but only with an average blended grain whisky of course.

Gidday Tracks. Mate, I'm halfway through a bottle of 10 year old Lapgroaig as we speak, also a bottle of 12 year old Glenfiddich Coaran Reserve (Coaran from the Gaelic for Peat Ember).

I'd be more than happy, proud in fact, to have a wee tipple with any of you. No invites needed.

Sorry its taken me a little time to reply to these posts. My 'puter HDD died and its been in the Tech Hospital being fixed. They had to replace the HDD and the DVD Drive/Burner....luckily on warranty. Can't say I'm real impressed with the HP product though....the HDD is a Seagate Barracuda and the DVD Drive was a HP LightScribe....and I lost about 130GB of data. It all turned to cack when I tried to do a backup. BUGGER !!!

Cheers, Vince

I like it all but do highy favor that which has no tax stamp....

Where I come from it's best known for one purpose and most tend to skip right to that part.

As a good Yank, I'm required to say that........
