Hey all you shooters I need some help. I just started reloading for my Weatherby Vangard chambered in 300 weatherby mag. I have friend helping my with the first batch and after we finished 60 shells we noticed that the crimp caused a case bulge right below the bevel. Should I even be crimping these rounds in the first place? This gun is taking me to Texas for mule and whitetail deer in November and I am told that I will be shooting 250 yards plus. (Just to give you ol'e pros some backround...) How crucial will case crimping be for this aplication?

Thanks,
Larry

HELLO LARRY

YOU DONT SAY IF THE BULLET YOU ARE USING HAS A CRIMP GROOVE IN IT. IF IT DOESN'T HAVE ONE I WOULD NOT CRIMP THE BULLET. I SHOOT A 300 ULTRA MAG WHICH IS VERY SIMILAR BALLISTICLY TO YOUR WEATHERBY AND I DO NOT CRIMP THE BULLET. I HAVE HAD NO TROUBLE WITH SHELLS IN THE MAGAZINE MOVING BULLETS UNDER RECOIL. IF YOU FIND THAT BULLETS ARE MOVING ON YOUR LOADS THE ONLY OTHER OPTION IS TO CONTACT LEE PRECISION ABOUT A FACTORY CRIMP DIE. THIS DIE WILL ALLOW YOU TO CRIMP BULLETS THAT DONT HAVE A CRIMP GROOVE. YOU WOULD SEAT YOUR BULLET WITH YOUR NORMAL SEATING DIE THEN RUN THE ROUND THROUGH THE CRIMP DIE. HOPE THIS HELPS.

What kind of crimping die are you using? I have the same gun and caliber and I crimp all my loads with a Lee Factory Crimp die. I have never had the problem you detail. (With or without a crimp grove)I crimp all my hunting loads especially the heavy mag loads.

I LOOKED UP THE LEE CRIMP DIE AT MIDWAY USA AND THEY SELL IT FOR $7.89 FOR YOUR .300 WEATHERBY. AS INEXPENSIVE AS THEY ARE AND IF THEY HELP WITH ACCURACY AS LEE CLAIMS I WILL PROBABLY GET ONE AND TRY IT OUT.

Pick up a lee crimp die, the extra step in reloading is worth it. Start off with a 1/2 turn once the die hit the shell holder at full stroke. Meaning send
the shell holder up to full stroke, screw the die down until it touches the shell holder then screw the die a 1/2 turn farther down. I use lee crimp die for 7mm mag,300 win mag,30-06,338win mag, 8mm mauser & 375win. I have yet to have a laod shoot better with out a Lee die crimp. I crimp all bullet types.

Hi

I've got a REMOTELY connected question.

I've been looking at a couple of weapons, recently. One in .300 Win. Mag., the other in .300 Rem. Ultra Mag.

If you didn't already have one or the other, which one would you get, and why, please? If you wouldn't get EITHER one, why, and if you'd get a DIFFERENT one, which and why?

Ok- I'm sorry this sounds like a Ph.D. thesis. I am interested, though, and would welcome any facts, opinions or W.A.G.s.

HI AL

IF I DIDN'T ALLREADY OWN A 300 ULTRA MAG I WOULD PROBABLY STILL GET ONE. THE MAIN REASON IS IT IS CAPABLE OF BEING LOADED DOWN TO 300 WIN MAG VELOCITY OR UP PAST THAT OF A 300 WEATHERBY. PLUS THE ULTRA MAG DOESN'T HAVE A BELT. THIS IS NOT REALLY A PROBLEM FOR THE WIN MAG IF YOU LOAD YOUR OWN AMMO. THE MAIN DOWNSIDE TO THE ULTRA MAG IS THE COST OF FACTORY AMMO. ITS OVER $40 A BOX FOR THE CHEAPEST STUFF ANY WHERE I HAVE SEEN IT. IF YOU HANDLOAD YOU CAN CUT THAT PRICE IN HALF EVEN WITH A PREMIUM BULLET. RECOIL IS A GOOD BIT STIFFER THAN THE WIN MAG ALSO. IT DOESNT BOTHER ME BUT IT MIGHT GET TO SOMEONE NOT READY FOR IT. A GOOD RECOIL PAD HELPS ALOT. ONE OTHER DOWNER IS MY 300 UM ONLY HOLDS 2 ROUNDS IN THE MAGAZINE WHERE A WIN MAG MIGHT HOLD MORE ON THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL OF RIFLE. ONE OTHER THING IS YOU WILL WANT TO PUT A PREMIUM SCOPE ON A ULTRA MAG. I HAVE A BURRIS BLACK DIAMOND ON MINE AND IT SEEMS TO BE A GOOD MATCH SO FAR. EVEN WITH ALL THE DOWNSIDES I STILL LIKE THE ULTRA MAG BETTER BUT THAT IS JUST MY OPINION. I HOPE THIS HELPS.

I have had and reloaded for about 5 or 6 300 WBY's. I never ever used a crimp. Never a problem.

Welcome to Hunting Nut !!!

I've used Midway for years.......great people to deal with.
www.midwayusa.com/

You can shop online or deal over the phone. 1-800-243-3220

They currently have 300 Weatherby brass and a good supply of 30cal bullets in stock.
