I am trying to find out the caliber size of the 7mm. If anyone has a link or a list of calibers from smallest to largest, I would really appreciate it. I have a really hard time converting the american calibers into their metric equivelints(sp), and vice versa.

So the closest caliber would be the .280? What is it comparable to ballistically?

In terms of trajectory, probably the 260 Rem would be the closest. In terms of energy, the 7mm Wby Mag tracks pretty close and has a slight edge.

What' the deal on 7mm-08? Anyone using them? I've been giving the purchase of one by the fine people at Remington some consideration but haven't found a whole lot of good first hand info. I generally trust the opinions I get here.

dimensionally with regard to ammunition a 7mm = .284"
caliber being the diameter of the bullet
the rounds called 7mm include
7-30 Waters, 7x57 Mauser, 7-08, .280 Rem., .284 Win, 7mm Rem. Mag, 7mm Weatherby Mag, 7mm SAUM, 7mm WSM and on and on and on.
There is not necessarily a direct conversion from metric to American size because even within American ammunition there is not any pattern.
Consider that the chamberings we call
.218
.219
.220
.221
.222
.223
.224
.225
and of course 5.56mm
all use .224" diameter bullets
A 7-08 is an excellent hunting round wiht tolerable recoil and plenty of range it would be more than adequate for all NA big game except the big bears.

The 7-08 is a very nice round. I had one for a while. Very light recoil, good selection of bullets, high load densitys and the round seems to be very accurate.

the 7mm -08 is by some considered to be the best all around whitetail caliber.with the large selection of .284 bullets a handloader can achieve more speed and an increase in power over factory fodder.while i can say i follow no ones opinion but mine i am not a 7-08 fan.just partial to my pistols in 375jdj,270 win,480 ruger,454 cassull.i did buy a 7mm-08 barrel for my encore just because i wanted the lupy that it was wearing,i traded the barrel in one day,so somebody likes them

well thanks guys, sorry to kind of having hijacked your thread cody. I thnk I'll go for it, though the one thing I did notice is that I'm either buying 140 grain bullets or getting into reloading.

Bob Hagel began campaigning for an American 7mm magnum in many of his writings in "Rifle" and other publications, demand increased, and Remington brought it out. It immediately pre-empted the 264 Win Mag and became a sales success. Still is.
In the most general of terms the 7mmRM has about the energy levels of the 30-06 with a flatter trajectory. It has been used successfully on most N American game and the bullet selection for handloading is superb, along with excellent factory ammo readily available.
On the down side, the big Remington trajectory advantage is marginal within normal hunting ranges and lacks the energy for sure kills at extended ranges. To get the most out of the cartridge, it should be in a rifle with a 24" or longer barrel and muzzle blast is increased over standard cartridges such as the 280 Remington, the 308 Win or the 30-06. It typically is limited to 175gr bullets on the heavy end of the scale.
Given the excellent choice of other rounds and combined with today's technologically advanced bullets, sales of the 7mmRM is slipping year by year. But, for many, it still is the "go to" rifle and continues to do a respectable job in the hunting fields of America.
