My buddy feel the same way. We sat and watched the new network up here, totaly devoted to hunting, and fishing. Onr show was after our own big Canadain Whitetails. Only we found they realy don't know what big is. Up here in the forest there are all kinds of 140-150 class bucks. What kills me is They pay big dollars for some guide to hunt for them and then shoot an Average buck any way. Then they yap about how they got a big Canadian Whitetail. By the way chambered221 your area has to have deer older than three. From what I understand, Deer are 4 before they have the goods to reproduce.

This year I sat in an archery blind during the elk hunt. My tag was for either sex, cow or Spike bull only. You have to draw out to get a "any bull" tag and the odds are outragous, more than once in a lifetime. Well I sat there day after day in the mornings and evenings, and watched turkeys walk past me at 5 ft, deer past me at 10ft, elk within 10 yards (Grrrr almost every single time they came in the wrong direction and I couldnt turn around to shoot without them seeing!).

The kicker though was one fine beautiful morning, the sun was creeping up over the far mountains to the east when the quiet morning was shattered with a big bull screaming. Over the next 25 minutes he got closer and closer until he stopped 12 yards in front of me and LAYED DOWN in the spring and rolled around. He was a huge 7x7 bull and I just couldnt believe something that big was that close. I could see his eyelashes I was that close. He stayed there for 10 min before getting up and roaring to the world anouncing himself as available to the females for breeding. It was quite the sight and something I'll never forget... sadly with the wrong tag, all I could do was just watch him, from first row seats no less. It was very neat.

Yea alot of these hunting shows are totally fake and what I worry about is the kids growing up watching these shows thinking "well this is the way hunting is".

This year I shot one of my smallest deer ever in my life... it was near comical how small it was. But you know what? My 6 year old boy was with me, toting his own binoculars, camo and other misc odds and ends to help "Daddy" find and shoot a deer. My first reaction to seeing this tiny buck was to laugh and then to look for something else... but man I tell you what, the expression and look on my boys face sealed the deal. He was almost out of his mind with excitement knowing hes right there Deer hunting and there is a deer we can shoot!

I let him help me as I got the gun ready and fired and at the shot 2 things happened, the deer dropped and my boy took off like a bolt of lightning up the hill after it. It was truely a great experience and IMO, one of the best hunting trips I've ever been on. When I got up to the deer his first reaction was "DAD! Let me call mom on the cell phone to tell her we got one!", he was so excited. He helped me dress it out, load it and bring it home.

We do watch a few hunting shows, but mainly instead of focusing on antlers, how they are hunting etc etc. I play a game with him asking him where in this scene would he aim his rifle to hit the deer? Would you shoot in this case? Good practice to get him thinking of where the vitals are (something I need to drill into my wife again I fear... she shot hers a tad far back ... ick).

There are good and bad hunting shows... some are funny (ie: The Huntley Way), some are strange (Tred Barta) and some are dumb (take your pick here). I've seen few that are really great tv shows. I think some of the DVD hunts are better and more reflect the above average hunter.

Well Mr. Dallan...It seems like you have had a fantastic season so far. You had the great privilage of being in the presence of a great bull at close range (I got chased by one years ago, but that's another story). You got your deer and your son was with you when you did. As far as he's concerned you are the great hunter...To look up to...What more could you ask for...Oh yeah...A wife who is a better shot...She hunts...Don't complain (too much)... Very Happy

Yep, Kids are just great to take hunting. Glad your hunt turned out so well.

I am taking my "kid" hunting in July. I told him
"one day we need to do" so, he immediately set about being way more excited than I expected. He has been planning our trip since I opened my mouth. When the "kid"returns from Iraq dad is taking him to Argentina for 10 days. They are never to old and neither are you. Very Happy

Dallan C,
I just finished the early season with my son and grandson, and even better than the 11 point, 192 pound field dressed buck my son tagged was my gransons reaction to all that went on!!!! He helped with field dressing both of our deer, was a gun bearer and tool handler, and handled the snow, sleet, and freezing rain like an old veteran. The boy is 10 years old!!!! What a stellar experience!!!!!! CONGRATS ON A FAB SEASON!!!!!! Very Happy

Can we just get back to the fella that posted something about "getting wild with Cindy?" Why do I suspect that has nothing to do with hunting? (Looking for a smiley that's drooling)

Knives and cleavers? Well yes sir, but she is also a cook with a Ruger BlackHawk .44 magnum with a six inch barrel that I would give some pretty special consideration to Hiding

I think that it was on last year.
Tred Barta was doing it the "hard way"
He said that his son would go elk hunting the "hard way"
He would shoot an elk with a rifle at no longer of a distance that he could shoot a bow.
Here is Barta's idea of the "hard way"
A paid guide on a private ranch.
Boy if Barta wants to have his kid do it the REAL hard way, I'm sure that all of us would be happy to help him.

Have you guys ever seen the many shows where many of the TV experts are hunting at the same ranch?
Says something doesn't it.

How many times have we all heard that the TV expert hunter shoots his game on the "last minute" of the "last day" of the hunt.
Happens to me all of the time.
As a matter of fact, I haven't scored with the muzzleloader yet, and season ends on Sunday.
Instead of wasting my time going hunting in the morning, I think that I will wait untill fifteen minutes before season ends on Sunday to post up.
Should shoot a big one then.

What about the Spirit of the Wild.
Nugent is even brave enought to show himself putting out a bag of feed for is game, on his private Texas game farm.
What a man.
Mystical flight of the arrow my butt.
Mystical flight of the money going from Uncle Ted's wallet to the owner of the ranch.

The only good show are Will Primos, and Eastman's Hunting Journal.
I know for sure that the Eastman's ONLY hunt public land.
My hat goes off to them.

Boy---did I go off on a tangent. wtf Shocked wtf

I think that I will take the snowshows and go on stand in the morning and dream about the record buck that I will shoot on the last minute of the last day of hunting on Sunday.
I may even pass on a couple of 160's tomorrow.
ORRRRR I just might shoot the first thing that comes along. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
