Can someone offer some help on a 300 win mag worth the money in the $500 range or less?

You looking for new or used? Do you have a brand preferance, or just under $500?

No brand preference really. I own Remington, Winchester, Savage. I would like a recommendation based on the new price or I can definitely locate a used model if you have a suggestion for a "retired" model.

Search around & you should find a new Savage 111F with AccuTrigger for that, as suggested retail is $539.

So you are a Savage fan?! What about a second choice? I sort of want a rifle that "looks" good (maybe looks better than it shoots such as Ruger does).

Personally, I don't like Savage, but that's just me. I have a couple, but to me, nothing compares to a ruger. I like going to the gun store and perusing the used rifles once every couple of weeks. I find that if I can locate a slightly used rifle in good condition, I can thus buy more, instead of having less, more expensive ones. If you have no problem buying off the net, there are some links that I have listed below. I have bought 2 rifles off the gunbroker site, and am pretty impressed with them. I have found that the people on gunbroker are a lot more honest and overall better people than those who frequent ebay. Just my .02 though I rather see the rifle in front of me before I buy it, so buying off the internet was kind of nerveracking for me, but it worked out better than I had hoped.

If you have the time, search Auction Arms or Gun Broker and you may find numerous rifles that match your interests. Often good push feed Model 70s are available under $500 and they are substantial rifles. If, however, you add another $100 then your options expand considerably.

Given that rifles often stay with us a lifetime, another option that may have appeal is using a Lay Away plan and getting a new and more expensive rifle that may be better for your long term needs. Many stores offer 60 to 90 day plans.

A great dollar value can be had with the Weatherby Vanguard. Superb accuracy is the norm. For example, at the store where I work there is a Vanguard in 300 Weatherby, used and unfired, for $409. New Vanguards will seldom push the $500 mark and are available in 300 Win Mag as well. Add a few more bucks for stainless or wood. My Vanguard in 338 Win Mag is consistently subMOA. My daughter's 243 Vanguard compact digests handloads or factory subMOA. Both these Weatherbys are the standard model.

Good luck in your search.

I found a lovely U.S. 1917 Enfield that has been sporteried and rechambered to .300 Winchester Magnum and wearing a 4x Bausch & Lomb scope for $150.00. I would shop the used gun racks in a few gun shops. Take care...

I'm with Handloader.
I own a Model 70 .300 Mag. Sporter Classic which I purchased for less than $500.00 a few years ago. The gun is like new and drives tacks at 300yds with my reloads.
You can't beat a Model 70 for quality and shooting.

Eric

For that kind of money...if it were me I'd go to a pawn shop. The typical .300 Win Mag isn't shot a whole lot and people in desparate times do desperate things. Likely you can find a sweet deal on a higher end gun and possibly even may come with extras.

Thanks all. I have been nudged by a local gunsmith who I trust to do all my work. He suggests a Tikka T3 in 300wsm. What do you think?
